We are moving to Saigon in four days and we are looking for a
temporary apartment. We will be looking for a teaching position, so we just need something temporary until we find a job. Does anyone have any suggestions? We are looking to pay about $200 or $300 for temporary housing. What district should we stay in and where are the international schools? Any help, advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Also if you would be up for meeting up for coffee, food, or drinks we would love to find out more about living in Saigon.
Thanks!
Randy

Use the apartment finding services on the housing ads in the VN Craiglist. They are fine. I have an apartment in district 3 for $250 with bills paid. 3 is a pretty good place to be, but there are good prices in most parts of the city. The one thing you must remember when viewing prices on CL is that 1 - this is VN owners targeting the expat community, so most of the listed units are on the high side, and 2 - CL has a huge problem with repetitive ads, and so you can see these high dollar units over and over, sooooooooooo, do not let your viewing of CL ads make you think that it represents the true VN market. Instead, it shows you what enterprising VN players HOPE to get from the rich foreign community, the high end units displayed are just a small slice of what is truly out there. $250 is doable, but that is about as low as you can expect (while maintaining western standards, like aircon, safety and private bath), and it will be about 25 sq mtrs. Jon's serviced houses may be a good choice for a short term thing while finding a more long term place, but hotels are fine too, and it can be fun to move around the city. |

Serviced (cleaned daily) rooms in District 3 next to KFC. With everything and an actual bathtub. Great location if you're looking for jobs.
No deposit. Pay per month in advance. $330 plus 2.5k/kw and 7k/Kilo for washed and ironed clothes.
Ping me if you want to check it out.
Jon charges 7k for power. That adds up fast. He does have a lot of different locations, though. He's a cool guy.
After you've been here awhile you'll find a better deal. I pay 7M/mo for a nice room, laundry, power, all the beer I can drink (and I drink a lot of beer) and magnificent food. That takes some relationship building. I'm eyeing a furnished house with a terrace for 6M, even (I want a dog and am about to get married). But I'm saying to get everything and no deposit without paying for the hotel equivalent while you get your bearings, you might want to check these out. |
