First off I would like to say HI and that I am really impressed with the wealth of first hand knowledge and experiance that I have found through this website
I have searched and looked all over the net on what could be described as the basics of teaching in another country, but I would like to know what I could do to prepare myself better before I go. I have some time. I will be graduating in Dec of 05 with a BA in Organizational Communications and a minor in Philosophy. I am going to be taking some esl classes here as well as brush up on my grammer. No need to be too rusty when I start to teach I am also going to be taking the only two Chinese language classes here, but before I take those I am going to be learning some mandarin on my own. I am pretty sure that this is a good start, but is there anything that I could do in the mean time, from now till about Jan 06 or so.
Thanks |

Yep - loads. That is quite some time to kill. First off, find your nearest ESL outfit and volunteer in whatever way they can use you. You should look for an opportunity to teach. Don't worry if it looks like you are going in at the deep end because you are volunteering - not making a career move. But what you are really doing is finding out if teaching is for you. If you can do it without getting paid and enjoy it, it is for you. If it irritates you in any way then you might just want to consider getting a job as an Organizational Communicationist or whatever.
Secondly, you should plan to travel to countries you might want to emigrate to whil you have some free time. If you want to go to China, book a little vacation there and see for yourself. You might hate it if you have never been.
The two biggest stress factors in EFL are teaching and living in a foreign culture. This may sound like stating the obvious but SO many people simply get their TEFL certificate and hop on the plane. They usually have a bad time and end up back home with a bad attitude sometime soon after. Do all you can to educate yourself in the country you want to work in and the job you are going to be doing.
And... you might want to work on your spelling of "grammer" and "mean time" |
