| It sounds like you already have your answer. $1,000 = doable, but not much fun. The question you should ask yourself is: Am I willing to live on green tea and noodles, and pound pavement at 0600 every day until I get employment come hell or high water? |

Well sure, but hopefully I wouldnt have to. Hopefully an organization like AEON or JET/ALT would mean I wouldnt have to.
But where would I be living? A 1000/month cant get me an apartment in Japan, can it? That's my big concern at the moment. |

| You won't be paying key money if you're living in company housing, and AEON subsidizes rent. Still sucks to live in company housing, though. |

Adam,
I think it is safe to say that most apartments will run you more than US$1000 to get the keys. You might get lucky with something like $1000-2000, but if you can't afford more, then don't count on most places letting you in. Some, yes. Most, no.

Hope and reality might match up, but then again the odds are they won't.
JET ALTs have sometimes gotten free rent or reduced rate rent. AEON caps rent at around 54,000 yen/month (as long as you take what they provide). Rates are going to vary with urban vs. rural environments, too.
If you figure rent will cost 50,000-80,000 yen/month on average (rural or urban), then do the math on paying for first and last rent, plus one more month's equivalent for key money. That's 150,000-240,000 yen to walk in the door. Phone setup will cost you more (depending on whether you go with any of a multitude of options, including just a cell phone), as will utilities.
Does this give you a better average picture of what you face? |

Do some basic research and read AEON's web page. The answer is there:

AEON provides teachers with their own single-occupancy apartment. The school takes care of securing this apartment and providing basic furnishings. AEON also pays the key money and deposits, so teachers are able to move in without having to deal with landlords or rental agents. |

Average number of hours per day spent applying for jobs:3

Cups of coffee consumed: 72
Interviews: 8
Successful interviews (presented with contract): 3
Exchange rate while in Japan: Approx 85Y/1$
Money spent: 1800$ (770$rent, 600$food, transport 250$, misc180$)
Number of working visas obtained:1
Full time jobs: 1 |
