I don't know if this helps or discourages the OP, but I work with FTs from the US, Japan, Canada and Oz, and we all have different experiences concerning "required" teaching experience and foreign health exams. It seems different rules apply to different countries - and individuals - in this Province, as do different administrative costs. The US applicants carry much higher costs.
As for the health exams, there is no way to know what they test for here. They drew one small vial of blood and told us nothing about which tests were being run. The Foreign Expert form requires only Hep and HIV. Xray and ECG were self explanatory. The foreign exams are simply for them to know that they're bringing over a generally healthy person; their costs and hassles are not small, esp if you're American. Maybe that's why I had to jump through flaming hoops.
Anecdotal reports are valuable as far as they go, but I think that there is no reliable way to accurately predict an individual experience in getting to China. My experience differed from half of what I read here, if not more. I'll stand by my opinion that you won't know until you start the process with a specific school in a specific Province.
Seven years FT experience and an MA? My FAO would jump on that, but not for 8K base. Add the perks though and you come very very close, plus full return airfare and nice digs, working 12 hours and plenty of opportunity for supplemental income. Cost of living? Fuhgetaboudit. Life is sweet sometimes. |
