| Hello, I am looking at China, and was wondering a few things. First how much could someone make with a BS in English but without a TESOL or such certification. I have done some research and talked with a man who taught in South Korea and understand that the pay is primarily biased on location and outside tutoring with the most money made in large cities. I was hoping to have a significant shift in culture and make enough to take Martial Arts classes as well as save something up. So does anyone know where might be a good location and how much the general pay might be? |

With no qualification other than a BA you can expect salaries in the range of around rmb5000 + housing and flight allowance. In most places it will allow you to live VERY COMFORTABLY with the cost of living being very low. There are exceptions, like Beijing, Shanghai and the cities around Hong Kong where the cost of living is substantially higher.
The only thing wrong with most jobs in china is the ability to save being difficult on the lower end of the pay scale because while you can live like a king on the salary the remaining few thousand RMB that you have saved doesn't convert into much when you leave China.
It will get a bit better if you get certified and improve a lot as you gain a few years of experience (and can then be in the rmb10k+ range when looking at jobs).

| Thank you tttompatz. Do you, or anyone else, have any idea of any on the side opportunities or general cost of living expenses. Also what increases could one see with a certification and which one to get? I saw one that was about a week course for about a grand I think? Would that have any effect? |

| With a TEFL certificate, you might make 500 RMB more per month. That's about 75 US dollars per month. Language Mills pay 5500 to 7,000 RMB per month, BUT they want you to work 25 to 30 hours per week. Public universities pay between 4,000 to 6,000 RMB per month for 14 hours to 18 hours per month with the weekends OFF. Some schools in China, want you to have two years experience. In Beijing, the salaries are not 5000-6000RMB. They are closer to 10,000+ a month. Look on this very website or just Google "10,000RMB" and "jobs".
In Shanghai, these salaries are even higher.
I personally know people in this country who didn't even finish high school happy to make their 5000RMB a month. Do not perpetuate the myth that 'schools cannot afford to pay us higher salaries'.
I earn over 12,000 a month at my regular job, 6,000 at my part-time job, and another 1,000 teaching privates.
And I am in a very small city. |

The OP asked about the "general" level of salaries that can be expected as a new teacher. The other posters answered accordingly. Who suggested that the schools can't afford to pay more?
It wouldn't be right to suggest that the OP can go to China and immediately duplicate your earnings. If you were to move to another city, are you sure you could even duplicate your earnings? |
