So what is it?

Current Raytheon advertisements give the compensation range from 40k to less than 60k, but it's unclear whether that's just the base pay or the bottom line. Raytheon is not doing badly, as they just raised their dividend and projected a rosy outlook, in spite of the economy and the promised cuts in defense spending. A google search shows Raytheon has been squeezing wages for a few years now, so the "fabulous" salaries may no longer be very fabulous, as the skimmings go to such things as dividends and bonuses for management.

Can anybody describe the bachelor apartments at the Raytheon compound in Jeddah? TV? Full-sized fridge? Bathtub? DSL?

Decent find, John. Tellingly, you don't see any rugrats as their evacuation and prohibition of return is what made me punch my ticket out. I gotta say, tho, R. O. who ran the Saudi program at the time was a real stand up guy. A credit to Raytheon and a man who will always keep Raytheon near and dear to my heart.

The bachelor's quarters are two-story billets arranged in two rows in the "back side" of the compound. They have one bedroom and the usual amenities. The major benefit of living there is that you are a stone's throw away from the motor pool thereby allowing you go get first in line for the program cars that aren't claimed by the employees on rotation.

Interestingly (to me), the playground in the last picture of the second row was just outside my villa's back wall. A great place to take my two-year-old, but could be a bother as many of the compound's kids used to hang out there at night...smoking...an raising a hell of a racket!

I was under the impression that you could get your head chopped off for being a practicing homosexual in KSA. Weren't these boasting cadets scared of serious repercussions from their activities?

And were these the same students who looked down on Western teachers for not being good people of "the Faith"? Laughing

And yes I know this is a bit of a thread resurrection, but I was curious about Raytheon and came across this interesting sub topic.

"Homosexuality" is in the rancid eye of the beholder...I knew of many righteous fellas who considered themselves DISTINCTLY non-homosexual as they considered themselves "pitchers"...not "catchers"...

It's the same kind of twisted Islamic logic explained to me by a high saudi government official at an embassy event whom I queried why he was having a screwdriver with vodka in it. He, with a serious note to his voice, explained, "Did you not see me put my finger in the drink and flick it before I drank?" I said that I observed that...he then explained the the Koran commanded to let not the first drop of alcohol cross yer lips..."That, was the first drop", he explained... Rolling Eyes

I'm not at all surprised at their selective interpretation of their 'holy book', in order to let them do what they want to do, as religious people have been doing that for thousands of years, but I am quite surprised they would do it so openly. I mean, if they got caught "pitching" or "catching" wouldn't they be for the chop? Or at least be flogged to within an inch of their lives?

Dear WellRoundedSquare,

"If you have a BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN ENGLISH, you are generally in like flint."

Although there was a 1967 James Coburn movie called "In Like Flint," that title was a play on words.

The original expression is "in like Flynn," and the Flynn referenced is most likely Errol Flynn, the Australian-born Hollywood movie star of the late 30s and the 40s (kind of a proto-Mel Gibson.)

Regards,
John
