It took me a long while to find my place in China. Now that I've found it, I'm content (most days).

Come here, work your work, rock your style, and you'll be fine.

The locals love ya, if you put the effort in..

The way how I see it it's a good way to potentially hedge against other economies.

If someone can save up say 10K they'll be able to afford more in going back home. Housing keeps going down so it would act as a multiplier effect.

I'm not trying to imply that 10K can put a nice down payment on something but it is significant...and if you can show you have had work despite the downturn...are able to work in a foreign country...are able to travel etc It looks good.

We are native English speakers, all. So we have options of going to China and dispersing teachings. In a sense it is privileged because it is an open opportunity, even for those without extra skillful areas and qualities. On the opposing hand, many others share the level. So competition grows fiercely. And the remunerations are lessened. So do not count on TEFL as a secure forward way, but a stopping-gap measure.

I agree with this post as I find that I too have found a balance to living in China and enjoy what it has to offer. The pearls that are attributed to a fulfilling life lay in your ability to adjust to what is and make what can be out of your daily existence. There are many possibilities in China but fewer among ESL I am afraid, however, most of the guys I know who have gone on to other employment have done so while earning their daily bread slinging English lessons. China has wonderful opportunities if your looking for them and in all its "glorious" reality is a place where breaking the rules and the mold can be rewarded.

Have goals.

Stay focused.

Be flexible.

That's what I see long termers who succeed in China seem to do.

1) To be part of and contribute to the creative element of this society, which
is striving to find solutions to its many challenges in reforms.

2) To be part of the free spirited element that the rigid, monolithic, and self-centric-mindsetted people could emulate.

3) To demonstrate differences in culture and life style are life enriching and improving properties.

4) To live better with less than what we have in our native countries.

5) To learn from the Chinese what we don't know and to teach the Chinese
neighbours what we do know so that we can become better neighbours.
