Hi, I want to report a fraud institute in Cuernavaca. I found it on the internet and was supposed to go work and take classes there. It says on the website they have 4 campuses- there is not even one! There was no job and there were no other students. A teacher came to my house to give me lessons, but I was all alone and very unhappy. I paid for 3 weeks of classes and didn't want to stay there, but the director refused to refund my money.

I am glad you had a good experience. It's been almost 3 years since I was there, so maybe they've gotten it together in terms of obtaining a campus and more students. Like I said, I was supposed to teach English also, and when I arrived there were no students for me to teach. There was also no campus. I tried going to the address listed on the website, and it was a residence, and not even the director's. It was maybe his aunt's house- just used for receiving mail. Nobody there knew how to find him.

I filed a legal complaint while I was there in order to try to get a refund. The director contacted me and wanted to meet in person to sort it out. I went, bringing along a friend, and he had a big friend there with him. They told me they would still offer me three weeks of classes (which I had paid for), but I insisted this was not what I wanted- I wanted a refund because I had been mislead. Then the friend proceded to tell me I owed him $3 or something for a drink he bought me. The director was then summoned to meet me by the complaints office and never showed up.

For somebody who may be more outgoing and feels OK about getting private lessons, this might work out. However, nobody told me that would be the case. My host family was nice but the father was sick so there was a very somber feeling in the house which did not help when I was feeling lonely. My experience caused depression and anxiety. Then my teacher mistook my depression for apathy and walked out on me during a lesson. In fact, it's been three years and I forgot I had made a post. Just reading back over it brings up a lot of negative emotions.

Another recourse may be the estatal (state) agency for arbitration and conciliation. I'm not sure if the state you are in has one but it is very effective in Chiapas for teachers who get screwed by evil owners. Owners will usually settle out of court if you have half a case against them. Be sure to get the settlement in cash on the spot because some owners will not honor the settlement agreement later. Make them go to the bank and wait for them to return to the agency with the cash to close the case. Don't accept their check because these sometimes bounce. If you taught for them, include vacation days, Christmas bonus, etc. in your claim. If you don't have a contract, a copy of the letter the school gave immigration for your FM3 will usually work. You will need to file your complaint in Spanish and it helps if you have a Mexican friend who knows someone who knows someone in the agency.

Well, I've been back home now since April 2004, so it's long passed now. I did do everything in Spanish, including a police report. I also took somebody with me from the new school I switched to. It ended up being such a hassle because they kept making appointments and he never showed up. They wanted me to bring witnesses. I had no witnesses, but I did bring teachers from the new school to at least be witnesses to the fact that I was currently studying in their school and came there very upset. Then I finally gave up because it ended up costing me time and money (for cab fare), and it wasn't fair to keep bringing my teachers there with me and getting them involved. Thanks for your suggestions, though.

Razz Well, I have studied in many different language schools within the city and I consider AuLangue to be one of the best in teaching. This is school is small and kind of new in comparison with others... I am not surprised that this gossip is an intention to help big schools to eliminate small ones. This is not new... The same happened to McDonalds about "their meat"... Let this people do their job, they are excellent. It is a great team that every school would dream about... Thom
