I hate broken records. Nothing makes me angrier than trying to play a scratched album. *skip* *skip* *skip* ARGH!!
I love records.
I bet I have about 25. Not too bad for living in a little tiny town most of my life. I usually get stuck paying 3 (Can) dollars a piece.
Much too expensive, but I love 'em.
I think my favorite is either my J. Geils Band "Freeze Frame" or Rod Stewart "Foot Loose and Fancy Free."
It's very difficult to find good records in boonies of B.C. (Salmon Arm).
I even have this little old fashioned portable player I bought at a yard sale. It doesn't work half the time, but when it does it's great.
Looks like a suitcase.
Hmmm... Maybe Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" is my fave.
There's just something about records. They sound so... real and gritty.
Maybe "Tea for the Tillerman" (Cat Stevens). The cover always reminds me of Alice in Wonderland.
Unfortunately I had to leave my records back home in Canada.
Are there any of you out there old enough to still have records kicking around? I wish I knew more people that did (for "borrowing" of course) |

I lost my record collection whne I was divorced, many years ago. The upside is that I was finally convinced to get a good CD player and some new music, the down side is that a lot of the stuff that I liked came out on indie labels and has never been released on CD. Sadly, I couldn't find a lot of the stuff when I was back in Canada, I may never hear it again. I did manage to ship my Django Reinhardt CDs to China however. |

The first thing someone old enough to have had vinyl wil tell you is never to lend them. They don't sound gritty - that's just your crappy lo-fi and trashed discs. My last vinyl system had eight seperate valve amplifiers, a glass platter turntable with an extruded titanium tone-arm and a moving coil cartridge with the entire moving bit machined from a single diamond - all $10k worth. After the real thing, it was as close as I've ever heard to live music. Once the pizza guy had to come inside and look before he would believe there wasn't a band in the house. Another friend had to go outside before he would believe that the helicopter buzzing the house was only on the Pink Floyd album.
Vinyl isn't 'nostalgic', it's simply a higher quality media than digital. I'm sure my ex-girlfriend enjoys my extensive record collection as she sits on my ex-furniture in my ex-house |

Anyone remember the first time they heard:
What's a record? OR
What's an LP?

I've had to explain to some of my fellow teachers what an 8-track is...

Just to complicate things, an 8 track is also a home recording studio thingie. A 4 track is the even more el-cheapo version, usually a reel to reel!. |

I don't remember if I was a part of the big moment here at Dave's. Hmmm...
I was very close to selling my beloved collection of U2 albums before I left the States--just part of my futile attempt to rid myself of material possessions. I don't know when I'll be back and don't have a permanent home anywhere--just a bunch of boxes in my ex-boyfriend's & parents' houses. The record store (Amoeba in San Francisco--an AWESOME place) wanted to give me about a tenth of what they were worth, I think. Thankfully, my darling ex talked me out of selling them, and now they are piled up with all of my other crap in his garage, likely not to be listened to for quite some time.

First record album .. Led Zepplin, the Hermit (no name, whatever)
Most interesting album ...I left my Doors The Greatest Hits in the back of the car. It melted ...three geometric sections warped upward. Very odd.
I didn't have a home in high school, so I stayed with various friends. SO now my albums are scattered across these various homes, like various parts of myself scattered about. I had about 12 Floyd Albums, including ones from the Sid Barret era. The first Pretenders album, , and Lene lovich.
Of course, though can download most of the stuff via the internet, but definitely not the same, especially the album art.
*-tracks were the best. The death of 8-tracks foreshadowed the death of music. I tried to convince the police to prosecute my sister for her using my Jefferson Airplane 8-track to prop up her refrigerator, but to no avail |

Well, I remeber asking what an LP was.
A small record, right? A 45 or something. I can't remember.
And when I say "borrow" I really mean steal. Sorry you didn't get my joke. And yeah, I have a crappy old player, but I like it.
And, unfortunately, I do not have $10,000 to blow on a record player (for my 25 scratched albums).
On a related note, I had to explain to my students what a video was. Crazy.
I asked them what did you watch before VCDs.
"Nothing"
When did VCDs become common?
What? 1996?
Sure surprised me.
I still remember our old beta machine when everyone else had VCRs. Buying our VCR was the most exciting thing I remember from the late '80s (when I was 6). Well, that and going to school, playing, Dad's court dates and whatnot, but still, a VCR!!!
Poor Chinese, never had the pleasure of owning their first VCR. (J/K of course) |

An LP record (or should that be a LP record) is a Long Play record and is usually an album (12"). And then you had SP and EP (both singles records but SP was 7" and EP was again 12") |

Worse. I was making some remark about famous black singers and mentioned Michael Jackson. My 10 yr old nephew laughingly protested "Michael Jackson's not black!". |

Ha ha! That's priceless!
Nik-knack, I hear you about the beta vcr -we had two before realizing vhs was the way of the future (the future ending a few years back when DVDs really came on strong).
I also remember getting our first microwave in the mid-80s. That was a big deal. I now have younger friends for whom they were always part of the household landscape. |
