am considering a teaching position in Shenzhen and am wondering if western food (beans,taco ingredients,mozzarella,canned goods,meats,etc.) are readily available and where please.

In Beijing, Jenny Lou's is where to go (some shops are better than others)
and in Shijiazhuang, Deluxe Market located in the larger Bei Guo Market in Future Mall corner of Zhongshan Donglu and Yucai St. is/was good but now about 35 % of space is wine and spirits.....less food customers,probably.

I like Chinese food but it's still nice to pig out every so often on old favorites.......thanking you in advance.

Metro and Carrefour will have what you need.

And even if you couldn't find what you want at these places (sometimes the selection is a bit thin for some items), HK is close by. I can leave the apartment in SZ and can be at the superstore in Yuen Long station and back in about 3 hours.

There's a Park n Shop in Shekou with a nice selection of meat and produce. There's a really expensive butcher in Seaworld that can keep you stocked in Australian steaks, sausage, British holiday food. Carrefour is probably the best though, in my experience. There's also Silver Palate for really hard to find stuff (but the prices are astonishing) and lots of little stores like Charlies and City Mart, but you should only by non-perishables there (lots of experiences with moldy, years outdated food). There's also a lot of mediocre Western restaurant including a new Mexican place in Shekou which is hit and miss but has good guac and chips. There's a guy who makes pretty dope loaded hotdogs and chili cheese fries. There's even a place that makes fresh bagels (Sams). There's other Western shopping like a decent book selection (Book City), IKEA, Sam's Club as well as gigantic knockoff commercial centers, if thats your thing.

Finally you're a convenient ferry ride from Macau which has excellent, Michelin-starred food as well as a very random American grocery store in Fisherman's Wharf (it sells mostly Western Family generic stuff like "Dr. West" soda but it has a big selection at rock bottom prices. Its worth bringing a suitcase to fill up with pop tarts, Marshmallow Mateys (aka Lucky Charms in a bag), mac n cheese, and giant boxes of Mike n Ikes.

Well, obviously I only eat organic fruits and vegetables that I lovingly grow by hand and locally sourced chickens named Henry that were raised cruelty-free in a solar-powered eco-house.

But, I try to be sensitive to the poor ignorant souls out there who fill their sad, empty lives with Sourpatch Kids and Doritos.

Yeah, I guess I just assumed if you lived in Luohu, you could cross the border and do all your shopping in Yuen Long or further in. I also like that shopping center at Kowloon Tong (Festival Walk), but the border crossing in Shekou isn't as convenient (its almost more convenient to go to Macau, plus I used to live there). I just wrote about what I know, which happens to be Shekou. I guess I should have been more clear.

Silver Palate is a store that only sells Western food. Its wicked expensive, but they have the best quality control. Yes, it is in Shekou.

By the way, if you do happen to come to Shekou, you guys should go to the re-done Bierhaus in Seaworld. The bavarian potato salad and weiner schnitzel (sp?) are the best I've ever had. http://www.bierhauschina.com/
