What are the prevailing attitudes, norms, behaviors, precautions, etc. surrounding STD's in Japan?

If there is all this casual sex going on in the gaijin bars and clubs, etc, what are the rules about disclosing that you have a sexually transmitted disease to a potential partner (HPV or gonorrhea for example)?

How aware are people about STDs in general?

1. Most, if not all, foreigners have them. 2. Japanese do not have them. 3. Condoms are unnecessary if you are only having sex with other Japanese. 4. Complete ignorance. 5. Vast underreporting of STDs in general.

Ummm, why are you posting this on an employment forum?

FWIW, the answers you got on www.gaijinpot.com are the best you can get.

Why not post it here? Everything else comes up. This issue needs addressed if people are going to come to Japan to work and play.

When I was in Japan there was a lax attitude to STD's. See the first response to your question for the answer. Everybody's doing it and everybody's sure it won't be him or her.

A friend e-mailed me from Osaka not long ago. After a few meetings with the girl of his dreams he was shrieking with pain during bathroom visits. Despite my urging, he didn't bother to inform the lady. Nor did he hurry off for treatment, preferring instead to wait and hope.

Last I heard, he's still catting around! So be informed, it's going around. Figure out what to do to protect yourself.

I think it's a perfectly valid question. No, it's not directly related to teaching, but it is something that people should be informed of when living abroad.

I had several questions when I first arrived here. As a single woman, could I just walk into a drug store and buy condoms? What about pregnancy tests? Other items? Would I create a scandal? Where could I go if I got a disease and/or knocked up? Of course I knew the answers to all of those questions in the States, but having to deal with a language barrier and a completely different culture makes it a bit more difficult over here.
