Hi,
So my husband is applying for Hess for January and as they most likely wont have room for couples then I will go with and try find a job myself over there.
What is the likelihood of me finding a job with similar holidays? I have a degree, TEFL and some teaching TEFL experience, what salary can I expect?
Also, do most people work 6 days a week?
Thanks! |

Hi,
First off - Hess doesn't have official holiday time, except for the official goverment holidays and many times they make you do a make up class after said holiday. If your husband wants time off, he'll have to decide when he wants the time off and then ask for it via his branch manager. Most of the time , time off can only be taken after a year's contract completion and it's usually a month. Some buxibans (smaller ones) do have periods where they actually close down and the staff have a "forced" holiday, but I don't know how many of them there are out there. So ,if you find a job where you guys can sort of schedule your time off together, that should be ok , I think.
Second - I know Hess requires a 6 day week, don't know about the other chains. There are other schools that only work Monday to Friday, but you'll have to keep your eyes and ears out for those schools, because their jobs usually go quickly. To me it's just plain silly to expect people to work on Saturdays and then if you add on "make-up" class days, you'll often find that you work on a Saturday night- which sucks big time. And then you have those "volunteer" options where you have to "work" on a Sunday, too (that's Hess for you!) wihtout being paid for it. Things like a family day ...blah, blah.
Sorry - just not a big fan of Hess.
I worked for them for one year-so I speak out of experience.
If you have any more questions - please ask. |

What scarab1169 has said applies to many buxibans, not just Hess. The reason the laoban demands a make-up class is to avoid giving any money back to the parents who do not want to pay for something they aren't getting. The six-day work week is nothing more than the laoban wanting more money by having more classes. There is no other reason for it.
Ultimately, your working conditions will depend on what concessions you can squeeze out of your laoban before signing a contract. This is much easier the second year and beyond when you know your laoban better and have shown that even with the concessions you're of more worth than a new hire. |
