Hello People,
Has anyone faced any dress code issues in kingdom? I'm teaching at one of the well known universities in Dammam (girls college) and its funny that you are not allowed to wear anything else but full length skirts and full sleeves top, in fact the security will check you at the gate and if you are not dressed properly then you are forced to either go back and change or wear your Abaya for the whole day. I was wondering if anyone else has faced a similar problem? Can someone give any suggestions?
Cheers,

Not really 'funny'. It's the typical dress code of a state-run girls' uni in KSA. In case you haven't realised it yet, Saudi Arabia isn't known for lax attitudes towards female dress.

I hardly see it as a 'problem.' It may be dull having to adhere to a strict dress code but at least the one in your college is clear and consistent.

Suggestions for what? In most workplaces, you are obliged to adhere to the dress code or risk being reprimanded. |

Hello Flowerules
My good suggestion to you is to wear your full black Abaya outside the border of the university, and your full length skits and full sleeves inside the border of the university!

Good one Grendal.
But, back to the question of the thread. I wasn't even in Saudi and all of my skirts were to the floor, although my sleeves were only to the elbow for most of the year (long sleeves at Ramadhan or when it was cool in the winter). This is Saudi... no surprise.
Did they not inform you of the dress code before you arrived?

Thanks for all your replies and my sincere apologies for the delayed reply
God/Allah bless Mobily (my internet connection got screwed up)...
@ VD - nope there was nothing with regards to dress in the contract!
@ Others - I'm aware that about the dress code and I am fine with it!
Now here's the other part of the story - I was in Jubail before and they had their own dress rules, then from this semester onwards I've been shifted to Dammam (Under the same univ). But everything I've now is as per the previous college books, which apparently doesn't get applied here (Though both are a part of the same University). So now I'm forced to scrap everything that I just bought new and buy more new ones...
On top of that - the shopping pleasures, no trial rooms, no alterations but refunds |

Oh noes... I better go get my shots!!
BTW... there is never anything about dress in a contract. Most legitimate decent employers will send you information about dress rules if they have them. If they didn't inform me beforehand, I would have asked. Anyway... this is the Gulf. It is an easy assumption that dresses and sleeves should probably be long in the most conservative Muslim country in the Gulf. And you can't miss by erring on the conservative side.
Check around for tailors... cheaper than buying readymade. For instance, I was hit by a surprise rule about requiring long sleeves during Ramadhan at my first employer in Oman. I checked with other teachers and found a good tailor... had three lightweight cotton jackets made up to wear for the month.
