Ok, simple question ?
If I don't send along a copy of my passport when applying for a job, will that automatically disqualify me? And why do they need the copy anyway? What if I black out the passport number and other numbers below?
Ive always been taught that your passport and information inside should always be protected. I'm a bit concerned that it can be used for identity theft.

I would be concerned who I'm sending my passport to, even a copy. You don't give too much information with your question, but generally I'd say that if a school is asking for it, then that school isn't worth considering as a potential employer. The only exception would be, once employed, if the school kindly offered to look after your immigration process. A few more details please. |

I've never hesitated to send any potential employer scans of passport pages. The risk of identity theft is minimal. If somebody wants your info bad enough, THEY WILL GET IT. Anybody who has the technology available to "steal" somebody's identity could just as easily create a new person.
There are at least four hotels in Hong Kong alone that have scans of my passport, it's SOP.
I know many people black out their passport number when they use scans, it makes them feel better, but I've never bothered. |

There are enough scam artists out there that some employers want a more solid means to verify your country of origin and what you look like. |

Maybe my cynicism comes from living in Mexico, when anything can (and does) happen. |

Most employers want to see your passport. Maybe wait until you've checked out their website, as opposed to sending to somebody who has just given you an email address. |

Simple question and simple answer(s)
They (as in recruiter or potential employer) need the scan of your passport because:
1) it verifies that you are indeed able to travel.
2) It verifies your country of citizenship and country of origin (immigration and visa issues0.
3) it verifies your age, gender and has an identifying photo so they can see what they are getting (your not applying for jobs in your home country and political correctness in terms of employment don't matter).
You can block out the number on the scan/copy but for all intents and purposes it is pointless (they have no real meaning, unlike your SSS number).
