I am currently on a 3 month tourist visa and have heard I can extend it. I am wondering how long can I extend my current visa for without having to leave the country and return.

I will be traveling to Hanoi soon to get it done as I heard the process is quite easy there at most travel agencies. Can anyone recommend some good places to go and how much it will cost.

It sounds like your a tourist. That's fine. Visit some travel agencies in the Old Quarter of Hanoi and shop around for the best prices.

3 months. Then again and again when it expires, don't worry about it.

Apparently its actually cheaper in Hanoi, but like I say, its as easy as giving it to a travel agent in Saigon too. Go to that Viet Dream Travel on Mui Bien (on the same side as Go2 bar), if he asks how you know its just $95 say you saw the sign in AK Hideaway bar.

I just shopped around a bunch of agencies for this, and the price for a one-month extension was the same everywhere - $60 USD. For three months, it varied from $180-200.

What I want to know is if I can do it myself. The stamp in my passport mentions "Fee paid - $10 USD." Why must I go through an agency? Has anyone renewed it themselves or tried?

I think you mean Bui Vien which is in Saigon. The OP asked about Hanoi.

This might be too late now, but I got a 3 month single entry extension for $45 at Chi's Cafe in Saigon.

Chi is honest, I've known her for many years. Cheers to you.

Surely unwise to get a 3-month single entry. Why not multiple? What if u need to go home for an emergency, or want to go to thailand or wherever?

Thanks very much for all the very helpful info everyone. I'm living in Vung Tau and my tourist visa will expire in just over 2 weeks. From what I've read it seems I'd be best to get it done through a travel agent in HCMC rather than trying to get it done locally or trying to do it myself. Since Chi's Cafe seems to offer the best rate I figured I'd go there first. Can anyone tell me how far in advance I ought to apply and/or how long they normally take to get it done? Thanks in advance.

OK, I didn't hear back from anyone following my last post so I went to Saigon, found Chi's and showed her my passport. After a few minutes on the phone to someone she told me she couldn't do it, the reasons being that a.) I had not entered Vietnam through Saigon airport and b.) I was not living in Saigon.
When I got back to Vung Tau I asked around a bit and a friend put me in contact with a certain Mr. Phat, in Saigon. Mr. Phat got it done for me inside a week. He is the man to see if your renewal is too tricky for the other agents. His fee for a 3 month single-entry visa was $125. I didn't ask what he charges for a multiple-entry but I expect it would have been a lot more.
I noticed that Chi charges $45 for a 3 month single entry and $95 for a muliple-entry. I think a lot of people would rather save the $50 than get a multiple on the slim chance that they might need one. I would.
If you pm me I'll be happy to give you his contact details.
