Just graduated with my Bachelor's and am thinking of working in Manila. I would love to work as an ESL teacher (perhaps to Korean students, etc). I'm wondering, what are the chances of finding work as an ESL teacher if I have a Bachelor's degree (Political Science), but no certificate like TESOL.

Also, I've heard that the pay for ESL teachers is terrible. This would make it difficult since I have $182 (US dollars) in loans each month. Would ESL teaching in Manila be enough to survive?

Also, I've heard that some of the better paying jobs are working for call-centers. Are there a lot of call centers that employ fluent English speakers, perhaps as an American accent coach. If so, does anyone know what the pay might be?

For the most part you would be unable to obtain a work visa (unless of course you are Filipino or married to one).

Pay scales on average for "native speakers" tend to run in the US$1000-1200 per month range for those who can work.

Thank you for the info. Also, just curious, why do you think I wouldn't be able to obtain a work visa. I talked with a Filipina who told me that I would.

With the high number of unemployed, QUALIFIED, Filipinos (many of whom were US educated) AND the fact that there are any number of foreigners (mostly married to or have Filipino family) with 13a resident visas or SSRVs who are willing and able to work you will find that most places won't be willing or able to sponsor a work visa for you.

In addition, there are too many people who simply work illegally as well (enter as a tourist and just do the bi-monthly extensions to carry them through 16-24 months then do a visa run to gain another 2 years worth of extensions again.

If you were a certified teacher and looking at one of the international schools it would be a different matter but just a non-related BA and no certifications = tough road.
