Hello I'm a long time reader, first-time-poster.
I'm looking to take an online TEFL certification course to help boost my credentials while looking for a job in East Asia. I was wondering what are some of the better online courses to take as well as how many hours I should take (I was thinking the 200-250 hours range would do)?
Also, how much do you think this certification would help me out? My other qualifiations include:
-BA in History
-Masters in Teaching
-2 years of literacy tutoring in elementary schools
-1 semester of student teaching Government
-1 semester of Social Studies in a middle school and a high school.
-Currently taking 1 last class to get my broad endorsement for a Virginia Teaching license.
Any pointers will help. Thanks! |

Since you already have a teaching credential, an online course should round out your qualifications nicely. I recommend American TESOL Institute, they have several certicates - a general one, one for teaching children and one for teaching business classes. I did the general one as well as the one for business classes, and found the instructors to be very helpful, quick response time when you submit assignments. I know a lot of people arent a fan of online certificates, but I also already had teaching experience, and just wanted to add to that. American TESOL also has live classes in some locations, and the materials used in both are the same. |

AS as qualified teacher the course that would be best would largely depend on where you want to head for and what/who you want to teach.
IF you are looking at working in an international school then real endorsements to your teaching credentials would be best.
If you are looking at private schools (NOT language academies) and primary or secondary levels then any TESOL cert will give you an idea of what you are doing in the subject matter.
If you are looking at adults or post secondary teaching (university level) then (in addition to your Masters) the long course would be best (firmer grounding in the theory of language).
If you are looking at Korea then you will only need a course of 100 hours (or more).
Most of the other countries won't care what flavor/brand or length you have (because of your teaching credentials).
IF you plan to look at a language academy (after school, weekends and/or adults) as compared to regular schools then they will often be looking for the standard 120 hours with 6+ hours of observed practicum and don't care that you are a real teacher with a teaching license from your home country (stupidity knows no bounds).
Bottom line:
Your BA/MA and teaching credentials are more than adequate to land a position as a teacher (subject teacher, home room, English or ESL) in ALL of the countries in Asia
and
will allow you to easily obtain a work visa / work permits as a teacher.
The difficulty (requires some work on your part) will be in finding a suitable employer while you are abroad.

Yeah I'm looking into going into one of these sectors, so I guess if I take the longer course, I'd be set with either. What would you recommend as a good online institution? I've been checking on American TESOL Institute and they seem pretty legit. Any other schools I should check out? |
