I've never been to Japan yet, but am interested in teaching ESL there. How much is the cost of living in Tokyo. For example, how much would the following cost?

-Monthly rent of an apartment if sharing with a roommate (of an apartment that has a kitchen, fridge, and stove), and in a nice, but not necessarily the most expensive part of Tokyo

-Utilities, if splitting with a roommate

-Avg. deposit that might be expected before moving in

-Comfortable (but not living like a king) cost of food each month if most food is bought from the grocery store but I were to go to a fast food place once in a while

-Transportation costs per month for public transportation (cost of a monthly pass if there is such a thing)

-Cost of eating at a nice, but not fancy restaurant

-Monthly cell phone service, plus the cost of buying an actual cell phone, sim card

-By the way, how much per minute does it usually cost to make calls to the US?

-Cost of internet service per month, plus the cost of installation (by the way, how much do laptops run for in Japan?)

-Cost of doing laundry (machine + detergent) per month?

-Cost of a haircut

-Cost of seeing a movie at a local cinema

-Avg. of monthly membership at a local gym for weightlifting

*I know this is a long list, but trying to be extra careful. Thanks for your help!

Pretty much the same as New York City or London. Some parts are more ritzy or rundown than others.

Rent varies considerably depending on location. You might pay 50,000 yen (each) or 250,000 yen. Buddy up to pay on the lower end (pretty much like you'd pay in NYC or London, so don't hope for much of a discount there).

Utilities: 15,000-20,000 per month total, depending on your habits and season

Realize that most apartments will NOT have appliances provided, not even curtains or light fixtures. Look up LeoPalace21 for places that do.

Deposit can run zero to 5 times a month's rent.

Food. Are you carnivore or strict vegetarian? The average carnivorous person will probably spend roughly 30,000-40,000 per month on food on the low end. Depends on your appetite and taste for expensive foods.

Transportation locally is usually paid by the employer. Figure 20,000-25,000 yen/month.

"Nice but not fancy" restaurant meals can run anything from a Denny's type (1500 yen) to 2000-3000 yen. Again, this depends on what you call "nice but not fancy".

Cell phones themselves can be 1 yen or free if you get an older model. Get an iPhone, and be prepared to splurge. Monthly service has so many options it's ridiculous here. Average = 5000 yen.

Pay for Skype minutes and pay about 3 yen/minute computer-to-phone. Computer to computer cost is zero.

Internet can be 3500-5000 yen/month. Again, the options are staggering. Installation is around 10,000 yen.

Laundry is done at home, isn't it?

Haircuts can be 1,000 to 20,000 yen. Figure 3000 for an average salon cut.

Movies 1800 yen. Depends on time of day and your gender and day of the week.
