|
|
Hey, I'm in Thailand currently, looking for work. I just completed two years in South Korea, but never bothered getting a TEFL due to the lax requirements there. Now that I'm here, it seems that my experience is meaningless as no one will take my CV into consideration without a TEFL attached.
So, my question is this: are things like the 40 hour online courses considered good enough to qualify, or do I need to drop $1000+ USD and get a 120 hour live course from Chiang Mai Uni or some other place in order to have my application considered by more than just Scammy McScammersons Scam Language School and Scam College?
Thanks in advance for any replies. |

a) E2 AND 2 years in a public school in Korea or
b) E2 and 2 years in a hagwan or
c) just 2 years and no E2?
IF:
a) then look at a public or private full curriculum school position; you know, the 8-4:30, M-F ones. Get settled, get networked and look for something better as well as opportunities for professional development.
Do be aware that you are off season (2nd term started a couple weeks ago) so you may have to find something to do (take a TESOL/CELTA) until April when the bulk of them do their hiring.
Your CV and those 2 years in the classroom does matter.
b) then find a place to get a TESOL cert (120 hours and observed practicum).
c) Good luck to you.
a 40 hour quicky course won't do you any good except at Scammy McScammersons Scam Language School. |

Thanks Tom. Yeah, it was the first one, with the E2 though E.P.I.K. I suppose the problem I'm in is that I can hold out until April living cheap, or I drop half my assets now into a TEFL/TESOL and might still have to hold out till April, but then not have any money to do so.
But one way or the other, I do need to drop the 50,000 Baht on a TEFL, right? I guess I may as well sign up for December at Chiang Mai Uni. |

I would recommend the CELTA as I did a text & talk course in Thailand a few years back and whilst it was good in Thailand it was fairly useless in Europe and I had to do the CELTA.
If your going to spend the money go for something that will travel with your rather than end at the border. |

The courses for TEFL at Chiang Mai Uni are now finished. Closed. Extinct. No more.
Major upheavals there in the last few weeks. Google for further info. |

Save yourself any potential problems in the future and just get the CELTA. It is the industry standard and is the most widely known cert. around the world. Expect a lot of work and expect to adhere to the CELTA way and you wil learn a lot and have no problems passing.
Anything online and/or less than 120 hours + 6 hours observed COULD potentially become a hurdle depending on the country and/or job.
Best of luck... |
