Hey guys!! Everyone has been really helpful and I'm sure this won't be my last post. But I have a question about Jalss and their hiring process. I don't know very much about them and I can't find hardly anything useful online.
I've seen both negative and positive comments about this company from, "This is the best company I've ever worked for, Go For It!!" to "This is the worst company in Japan!!" Nonetheless, I filled out an application and they got back to me with an offer saying that that particular job would be mine if I passed the interview process and was able to get my visa before the end of March. They asked me to go ahead and send in all of my visa requirements ASAP (even though I hadn't had the interview) so we could start the process. They also told me to add them on skype and send them my skype ID and a time that I would be available for an interview (I did this part immediately). It's been nearly five days now and I haven't heard anything back from them yet. Not even the confirmation of my interview date & time. I've sent an email about it and still no answer.
Does it usually take that long to hear back from them? Should I go ahead and send my visa information without having the interview first? |

Five days is not nearly enough to wait for any employer. Minimum I would expect is 2 weeks, but even that might be too soon if they have a set recruiting period.
As for good or bad news about JALSS, let me contribute to the negative pile. I have never ever heard any good news about them. There is a horrible thread about their shenanigans running now on Gaijinpot. Just as one point, they actually took a guy's passport and refused to return it during the visa application process. Then they tried to charge the teacher almost 20,000 yen for it. Think about whether you want to work for a place like that. |

Yeah.... I would hate for that to happen to me.... I'm not sure how they get your visa for you anyway. They didn't ask for the Passport, just 2 copies of the whole book. Wouldn't it just be easier if they just gave me the COE and let me get my own Visa? The offer of $45,000 a year sounds good, but i'm not sure it's worth it.... I've put in some other applications with other companies... Maybe one of them will be better...

What position are they advertising $45,000? Their regular ALT advertisements only say 280,000/$2,800 per month although I've read more than a few complaints from people after JALSS found ways of never actually paying what was advertised.
But $45,000... if something souns too good to be true, it probably is. |

Hey! This is what they emailed me about the job.... I have no idea whether or not this is a real position.
1- job offer
Language Teacher
Support and give advice for english teachers, to conversation school teachers.
Level: from beginner to Advanced, in conversation english mostly.
Teach in English schools and conversation public schools.
Lessons: 25 lessons a week, 45 minutes each or 50 minutes each.
WOrk hours: 8:15 am and up to 5:15 PM
Monday to friday, no work on holidays and weekends unless notified. maximum work on weekends or holidays is once a month.
Income
we offer the following package.
Process visa for you. For visa application costs, explanation below.
Assistance in Housing, rent, real estate contract, explanation below.
Assistance in furnishing the apt.
Competitive salary for about 45.000$ a year
FUll health insurance coverage and/or pension plan for qualified candidates. |

All they or you have to do is supply immigration with paperwork, and you pay about 4000 yen to immigration. No lawyers are needed, but JALSS has often said they use one and try charging teachers for that use.

That's completely unnecessary. All they need is the page with your picture and basic info on it. By asking for the whole thing, they want to see where you have been recently, which is a breach of privacy IMO and unrelated to hiring.

The two of you apply, and the COE goes to the employer, who then forwards it to you. After that you take it to immigration and the process is finished. If they want to take your passport to immigration for that final step, it is more work for them, yes. But they sound like micro-managing control freaks to me.

Whoa! That sounds like a serious typo or some kind of scam. Few employers pay that much. Get more details.
At today's exchange rate for US dollars, that's 3.78 million yen per year (higher than JET), or roughly 315,000 yen/month. This is pretty high end on entry level job scales, and I don't really believe they offer that much. Their own homepage has plenty of typos in the job postings' salaries, too (from $280 to $2800 per month, but even $2800 works out to only $33,600 per year,not $45,000). Be wary. |

I totally agree. I think i'm just going to wait to do anything until I hear back from them and get to ask a few questions. |

This is something I remember hearing before about JALSS. What possible reason could they have for wanting to see your WHOLE passport? Nobody besides immigration officials and law enforcement officials should EVER need to see anything outside of your information page or your current visa for your current country. |

That's Y309 525 a month according to XE. That's not really too good to be true, it's more like on the high end of normal. |

I'm wondering why they told me the number in English. $45,000 is 309,506.25 yen per month, but that is only if the currency is 82.535 JPY to the $1 USD like it is today. As most jobs in Japan, it'll be a salary-type position so I don't think they would adjust the pay to match $45,000 USD every month. I understand that they might be be trying to get me to understand exactly how much they offer but still, I think that offer is going to vary a bit.
BTW, still no contact about an interview... |

| Well because they were giving both $2800 and 280,000 yen (actually 28,000 yen but I'm assuming that's another typo) as the salaries for ALTs , I thought they were just using the old $1=100yen formula... otherwise those poor people applying for the $2800 job are being extremely short changed; they would only be earning about 230,000 yen... that's a massive 5 man difference! |
