|
|
I'm finishing up my MA TESOL in about a year and a half. When I'm done, I'm either going to teach abroad, or try my hand at part-time teaching. I really want to teach abroad, but I don't know if I could be away from my family for that long. If I choose to stay, what would a life of part-time instructor be like? In California we call it a freeway flier. Any thoughts would be helpful. |

You can't get a visa for PT work. You can be a student here, someone's dependent, or have a cultural activities visa and in all cases get only PT working allowance, but with any regular work visa, you must have a FT job when you start working here.
If you are talking about short-term work, the majority of contracts call for a 12-month commitment. The biggest notable exception would be Westgate Corporation, but you usually seem to need experience teaching.
So, which is it that you meant: PT or short-term? |

I think it would help us to know what you mean by "abroad". Are you currently in Japan and finishing a MA TESOL, and asking about teaching part-time in Japan vs. teaching abroad (e.g., in China, Korea, or somewhere else)? When you talk about choosing to "stay", where do you mean? When I read your (identical) post in the General forum, I thought you meant you are currently in the US, and trying to choose between teaching part-time in California vs. teaching full-time abroad (e.g., in Japan), but seeing your post here in the Japan forum and Glenski's response (which assumes that "stay" means in Japan), I'm really not sure where you are. Help us to help you. |
