Is there anyone here who had requested a Kanto placement with ECC? I just received an email from ECC HQ stating that all recruits who had requested Kanto for the February-March training session cannot be accommodated for placement there:

Quote:
Recently, I received an update on the Kanto district new teaching staff intake numbers for February and March or next year. Unfortunately, due to a number of factors, the Kanto district has requested no new teaching staff for positions in the Tokyo metro area. This news was unexpected, for though the number of new teaching staff requested fluctuates from year to year, this is first time that the Kanto district has requested only one group of 6 new teachers (all of whom were recruited in mid 2010, and received placement in early November for positions starting in mid January). Because of a sharp drop in the number of teachers who have informed management of their departure at the end of the academic/contract year in March of next year, along with some consolidation of regular classes at larger schools, the Kanto district has decided to hold off on bringing new teachers into schools until sometime after April, 2011.

Does anyone have any idea how many people might be in this placement pool? I'm seriously on edge about whether they have hired substantially more people than they will be able to accommodate (which, for the record, I was specifically told during the interview absolutely would not happen).

Can't say that I'm too surprised, though that does suck to hear. I personally requested a Kinki district placement so this is the first I heard of this, but I don't doubt that this will affect all of us hoping to come on board in the next few months...

You're not alone, by the way. I got that same assurance during my interview.

When/where did you interview, whispechoes? I went to Toronto in late October. Have you received any updates about your placement? I just found out that Kinki is full for Feb-March and Chubu is just about done as well. I guess in a way I'm not totally surprised myself: assurances mean nothing from corporations, after all.

May I ask where you're getting your information from?

I interviewed in November, myself.

Everything I've heard has been from Dustin Green at HQ via email.

That is rather odd- and a shame for any of the new recruits who were really hoping to be in Tokyo/Kanto.

Dang, sorry to hear that. It is just tough with the economy nowadays so I can see a lot of teachers deciding to stay, so it is hard for ECC to predict. I also heard from ECC that all the Kanto locations were set for the Jan-April time frame. Did they give you another option or do you just need to wait till something opens up? I got my placement all confirmed so I hope I am all set to go, but I did not have a specific location request.

I hope it all works out for you, good luck!

Really? I'm surprised they'd make a different time frame for each region, unless they're just not keeping everyone in the loop for some reason. I was told that April start dates are exceedingly rare. Where did you interview?

I was given an option to be considered for one of the middle-of-nowhere spots, of which there is literally only one available, as well as for "a few" Chubu region positions, which it turns out are not actually vacancies per se, but are in fact only unconfirmed placement offers for other candidates who may or may not choose to turn them down. The thing that makes me most uneasy is the huge unknown as to how many people they'll be able to recruit for any future training sessions whatsoever. I'd gladly take a spot in my least-preferred region than be kept in limbo for however long.

Well, hope that they get back to you with a possible placement soon, if the placements for Feb-March (or Jan-April, for that matter!) are all filling up so fast. Best of luck to you!

Actually it seems pretty likely that they would. Those kinds of large chain schools often have the same office staff travel around the country for orientation and training, so it makes sense to break the country into chunks, gather as many new staff as possible within those chunks into training sessions, and then stagger the training sessions so that they can handle the process with as few office staff as possible.

OK so I've heard back... apparently the next placements won't come until May or even as late as July. Confused I just hope that their recruitment numbers at that time are comparable to their original projections for this recent recruitment, though I have no idea how many people are in the placement pool or how many placements tend to open up in late spring/early summer. Apparently they are still holding interviews abroad though, I would guess that's a good sign?
