Well that's quite easily arranged too ('Wink') You just have to be discreet about it.

So, how much are you spending every month? Therein lies the answer...

We have a whole thread on that video already. Besides, it is not about life in Saudi, but about a specific teaching point.

Vertical,

I don't recall offering advice on getting to any side of any road and not getting squished! However, I do believe that in KSA, one increases one's chances of getting to any side of anything in a healthy state by being surrounded by two tons of metal (in which you start the journey firmly belted in, as opposed to becoming encased in said metal after any impact Laughing), provided said tons of metal are supplemented by airbags, seat belts, impact absorption zones, more seat belts, side-impact-bars, ABS, EBS, more metal, Traction Control and maybe an aura of good-fortune on the day. If you can find a T-34 tank going cheap, I'd advise it, although apart from maybe Thursday nights, the loaded cannon is optional! Rolling Eyes

Some people choose to run a car, some not. I personally always favoured car ownership in Saudi for the independence it gave me, as I've always loved going places, and generally ar5ing around:)

Your membership of the Club 500 depends, as VS has pointed out, on how much you spend in a month overall, not on the mode of transport. I know people who hitch a free ride from someone else who is paying for a car (provided said driver is in a very benevolent mood), but who then blow a load of cash in Bahrain. I also know folks who choose not to drive but get a taxi every day. They would definitely not qualify for Club 500. On the other hand, someone who drives a vehicle that he owns outright, just short distances to work, could qualify for Club 1,000, if not quite the 500. It's not how much you spend getting there, it's how much you spend, full stop.

So, do you qualify for Favoured 500 status?

You still haven't stated the reason why you walk. Is it:

1. Because you dislike Fords generally?

2. You just don't like Explorers

3. You don't like the noise of 5-litre engines

4. You reeeeally care about the environment

5. You feel that a 5-litre engine may encourage fast driving and thus don't feel safe

6. You dislike the owner of the Ford Explrer

Ya see, ya gotta be more specific, man.

And do you really feel so safe & secure walking on an open highway in Saudi?

Or are you just in denial in a valiant, modest attempt to play down membership of the elite 500?

You've told us nothing so far Laughing

Sorry for not s.p.e.l.l.i.n.g it out Bebsi..

but let me digress a little first (as my xWife did so often)..
Quote:

this is like de'je' vu, I'm certain someone made the same recommendation to me before I even arrived. I have been looking in all the showrooms, but haven't found one with A/C and electric windows yet. I have also concluded that a hooter (or horn as they call it in the colonies) is an imperitive item in any vehicle here in the KSA. (I understand it is considered a standard item, while brakes are considered an optional extra.)

So, no "la", I have not purchased a car yet. (Although I would need my Iqama for that anyway, and I am still waiting for the {apparently imminent} arrival of that vital little document ... insha Allah)
My expenditure though is in excess of Sr3000 pm. (Most on food, much on cigarettes and none on transport).

And finally, to answer the original question..
I walk, not for health. (That would be hypocritical of me!)
I walk, not because I can't afford a taxi.
I walk, for fear of injury! Shocked
Whilst walking, I have the ability to make split second decisions and take lightning fast evasive action. (a la Karate Kid)

But, given time and an Iqama {insha Allah}, I do have my eye on a nice Mustang (black of course) or perhaps the cute little Mazda M5 (black of course). Do they do the T5 in black, or are they all that horrendous greeny brown colour? That colour's just not cool enough!
No, the Mustang will definitely induce more jealousy from my eldest son back home.. That's priceless..

OMG Vert... black? A black car in the desert? Do you have someone to dust it 3-4 times daily? Personally I would buy a beige car... so it doesn't always look ugly and dirty. Cool

Dear scot47,

Life-in--Death, maybe?

"On board are Death (a skeleton) and the "Night-mare Life-in-Death" (a deathly-pale woman), who are playing dice for the souls of the crew. With a roll of the dice, Death wins the lives of the crew members and Life-in-Death the life of the Mariner, a prize she considers more valuable. Her name is a clue as to the Mariner's fate; he will endure a fate worse than death as punishment for his killing of the albatross."

I TOLD you not to shoot that #@$%^&* bird!

Regards,
John

VS.. of course black. Why have a flashy car in a colour which camouflages it? Visibility is key! And, of course, I have access to numerous Bangladeshi friends willing to run/cycle behind me with a cloth and polish which they will vigorously apply at each traffic light.

Aah yes John..

but bare in mind he was left to walk the earth for all eternity to tell his tale and teach those willing to listen ..
.. Much like us, I guess.
But more appropriate to our environment and widely quoted is the stanza :-
"Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink."

Although we often rephrase to: "but not a drop to drink"

Either way, a great epic poem by Mr Coleridge
