Snollygoster, I'm also curious about your comments.

Where can someone without a degree earn more than $15-17?

Maybe I dont want my sources bothered by an avalanche of enquiries. Sorry but I respect privacy.
No more comments from Hot Rock on this matter- I DID warn you hot rock. So now hot Rock wont be able to post here any more, lets get on with the subject of the thread.

Yes, jobs paying over $15 hr for non degree applicants are available, and the vacancies are public knowledge. No secrets, and certainly not "pathetic". The NewHanoian advertises them almost every day, and I have personally placed a number in high profile "language mills", without BA at starting price of $20 in hand. These were fresh faces new off the boat-so it is quite commonplace. I also see that another poster quoted in another thread that he/she wont work for under a figure well above the original quote of $15, and without BA or CELTA/TESOL etc. So this is not fantasy.

I have a young friend who just completed a TESOL course recently, no other qualification, and started at a small school on $25 in the hand. Sure there are no paid holidays or pension plan, flights home, insurance, dancing girls etc, but thats the trade off.

Also, it is NOT necessary to have a degree to get a Work Permit. In this area Vietnam has shown some forethought and accepts relevant experience as acceptable in lieu of degree. It needs to be well documented to avail yourself of this option.

So for anyone who was scared off by the negative opinions of the odd naysayer, take heart-there is light at the end of the tunnel, and you dont have to sell yourself short.

Hi. don't despair. I think you can work here, but you should emphasize your strong points. Go with the Celta. I suggest you downplay the fact that you dont have a degree, and there are a few ways of doing this. Put it way down on your resume, and put CELTA first at the top. They wont really care as long as the CELTA is backed up with a notarized photocopy to prove it's valid. The Vietnamese are very adamant about the documentation being all in order. Is there any way to get a fast degree by taking some tests or classes? Far be it from me to tell you to cut corners but from what I know after working here what matters is appearances. They themselves believe almost no documentation whatsoever without an elaborate chain of approval and notarization. All is not what it seems.

Hiya, I've just joined so cannot PM you directly, Snollygoster.
I intend to move to hcmc in September this year (phew now 2011) to take CELTA, but am flexible with where I live - Hanoi being the opposite end of the country, but equally NOT the UK!
Any help and advice is much appreciated, thanks.
Already looked on New Hanoian - very interesting.
I hope to get a PM soon(ish).

I would advise new comers to be careful and do your research. Check your sources two to three times.

Weight the economic variables that are beginning to affect the market here. I know many highly qualified and connected people who can not find work in HCMC. Finding work in Ha Noi is easier but the available hours are questionable.

Many people I know are making plans to jump to other countries. They do not want to leave but work conditions and making ends meet has become more difficult.

Also, getting a work permit without a degree is very, very difficult but not impossible. Working on a three month visa can be stressful as you never know what will happen or what will change regarding visas regulations.

Life here is a crap shoot. I may work out well but have a plan B.
