Hi. I was wondering if anybody knows about where to find temporary work, until June 2011 at the latest (I've got a major project after that). I'm a native speaker, UK citizen, graduate CELTA-holder with almost 3 years experience of teaching adults and adolescents. It isn't important to me where I go for the period.

Are we talking January to June, for 5 or 6 months? You could do that at a language school in Mexico and much of Central America. I'd probably rule out South America since January and February see very little work over what is their summer, shortening your period to less than 4 months.

Yes. Thanks for the advice. Can you recommend any web sites which advertise central American postings? And would my being a Brit be a hindrance?

Hi Cole,

I don't know you at all, so don't know if you would be open to something like this or not, but this came to mind when I read your post so I thought I might as well post my thought.

If you're just looking for a nice place to hang out for some time where your living expenses will be covered (and don't mind working while there, though you would not be teaching English), you might consider volunteering at Ratna Ling Retreat Center in Sonoma, California. I'm pretty sure the Yeshe De Tlibetan text project accepts volunteers for 6 months or less. If interested, you could email them and ask.

Hi Gloria - thank you for your kind idea. While the idea of expenses-paid volunteering doesn't put me off, I can't in all honesty reconcile myself to a religious or spiritualist ethos. I'm a devout atheist..

You could get a job in Mexico for sure. The tourist visa is 180 days long.

Just get a flight to Mexico City, get a room in a cheap hotel downtown for $70 USD per week and start pounding the pavement.

A cheap prepaid cell phone can be had for about $30 bucks.

Besides that you'll just need to eat (which can be done cheap) and you will probably join the ranks of business EFL teachers very quickly.

I've seen a couple jobs in China that only require you to sign a contract for a semester. Another alternative woudl be to ask jobs if they could shorten your contract. You lose out on benefits such as housing, but I've successfully shortened contracts by talking witht hem ahead of time.
