No Lynn, it was supposed to be platonic. They were both married, in difficult marriages maybe, but they were meant to be friends, perhaps with a little parent/child thing thrown in, but the sexual chemistry was between him and the hotel bar singer.
And Sofia Coppola has yet to write a film where two characters go through the process of falling in love |

I'm not too sure. I think that the love theme was pretty clearly implied. The movie establishes that each of the main characters feels very out of place in their respective marriages. And movies have a long history of showing people married to one person and in love with another - Ilsa from Casablanca comes to mind.
Notice how Murray's character is embarrased to be caught with the lounge singer (and that relationship seemed to be a meaningless spur of the moment fling.)
And then there's the nice, juicy Heavy Handed Ambiguous ending. But there were enough onscreen clues along the way to suggest the possibility that they "get together." |

I feel that with new movies we get so much hype when they are released that we are pressured into seeing them. Then the result id disappointment becausu they were shamelessly overhyped in the media.
Don't be in such a rush to go and see a movie, and remember there are cinema industries away from Hollywood. Try out a German or Iranian or Chinese movie ! Watch some of the older movies on the box or on VCR.
Will I now be flamed as an evil anti-American ? I guess so. Ah well, so it goes to quote Kilgore Trout. |

No Wolf, it was a platonic friendship. That's the whole point of the film, that they were never going to see each other again, that thier little friendshiop helped them to re-evaluate their lives, to an unknown conclusion.
As for the embarrassment with the singer, that's a very human response. Wouldn't you be in the same situation?, especially if your friend knew you were married?? |
