Hi everyone,
I'm an EFL teacher in Vietnam and the school I work for (which I really like) apparently has somewhat tenous links (through the Australian company IDP and perhaps the University of Sydney) with the English Language Department at the University of Shanghai. I've done a search both on Dave's and Google but information is a bit thin on the ground. I'm just considering future options so if anyone knows about what it's like there it would be great to hear from you. Many thanks. |

Sarge, are you referring to the Sydney Institute of Language and Culture at Shanghai University? I was offered a job with them several years ago but opted for another school. I just googled SILC Shanghai University and came up with a lot of hits. |

Thanks so much TexasHighway. Wasn't sure on the name but just did a search with the name you gave me and saw that they that the Sydney Institute are linked with In Search which makes sense. Now I have the name I can do a bit of research and if Ill post back of Dave's if I need more info. Thanks again. |

Dave's really is an interesting website - people ask about schools that they don't know the name of!

Certainly is. I work in a school named ACET in Vietnam (owned by the University of Sydney and IDP). Just by way of example, there is another school in Cambodia called ACE (owned by IDP but nothing to do with the University of Sydney). There are other schools linked to us out there with different names, in different countries, and IDP and the University of Sydney have different partnerships with different entities globally.
I heard a rumour in Saigon about a school that was linked to us somehow in Shanghai but, as we all operate independently, nobody at ACET knew anything about it (which included management). Did a search using "Shanghai" and "IDP" and got nowhere. Ditto after I did a search using 'Shanghai" and 'University of Sydney". However, thanks to TexasHighway, I now realise that the linkage to our school was through INSEARCH which is where ACET gets its textbooks for out IELTS courses The rumoured link was even more tenous then I first suspected!
I am interested in perhaps living in China one day. I love the school where I am working so I thought I would like to find out more about it. As a registered member, I decided to start a thread politely asking others who are 'on the ground' in China if they could give any info. Naturally other posters were free to respond or ignore it. A fellow poster has kindly put me in the right direction. I'll check it out and if I want more info I shall feel completely free to ask for it. Under these circumstances, I don't think I have done anything particularly silly or unreasonable but if others care to disagree then that's just a cross I'll have to bear. |

I was interviewed by a nice Aussie lady but, as I said, I took a job elsewhere. She did say that in the school, you work with other FTs on teaching modules that you develop with them. I guess that works fine if you have some good teachers to work with. But when we used that approach at a school I worked at, I was teamed up with a bunch of slackers and egomaniacs, so it proved to be a disaster. In that case, I would rather work on my own.

Obviously, if you had a clear idea of what the school is all about, you wouldn't be posting a question. Every forum has its trolls and this one is certainly no exception. So don't get discouraged and feel free to ask any other questions you may have. |
