|
|
Hi all
Im on the verge of leaving my life in the UK behind me to teach abroad and I am serious considering Bangkok. However, it seems to be quite difficult to get a gauge on getting a job there.
I have a Business degree and a Trinity CertTESOL certificate and will have around 2000 ($3100) in savings by the time I fly out in end Feb/Beg March.
Firstly is it common for people with no experience, just a degree and TEFL certification, to obtain a job. Are there alot of private schools to send my CV out to??
Also is 2000 enough for me to be able to survive on for a few months in case I am unable to find employment??
How competitive is the English teaching market out there at the present time?
Thanks in advance for any advice provided!! |

Since you have a Bachelors degree, TESOL cert and will be here in April finding a job will be about as hard as walking off a curb.
Lots of schools will be looking in March but the job itself won't start (you won't be on payroll) until the end of April with the new school year starting in mid-May.
There are LOTS of language academies but not all of them will give you full time work (until they have actually seen you in the classroom). Many won't help you obtain a work permit or assist with changing your visa to non-immi "B". The better ones will but many won't.
Regular schools won't pay as well (30-40k baht per month for green newbies) but there is job security for your first year while you get the lay of the land. They are full time and will (help) get you a work permit and 1-year "B" visa. Good ones will pay for it, others won't but they will help and take care of the paperwork for you.
Words of advice:
Don't rent an apartment (long term) until you land the job. It is ALWAYS easier to find a place closer to work than it is to commute in BKK.
Get a phone early.
Make sure you save about US$500 (for visa costs and a visa/border run if needed.) This is NOT a place where you want to get stranded and if you are caught on an overstay, a detention center is NOT a place you want to be.
Arrive with a double entry tourist visa from the Thai embassy in the UK in your passport (effectively giving you up to 6 months in country) so you aren't up against the 30 day time wire of an "entry on arrival" stamp.
Keep an eye on the job postings here and on MOD EDIT
