Hi, I applied for one of the many jobs advertised on esljobs.com by a recruiter of the name of esljobtaiwan - a Mr Bryan Wu - and within 10 minutes of sending my CV, I receive an email from him offering me a job in JhuShan town in Nantou county at Xu-Yin English School, which seemed a bit fast for my liking! Has anyone come across this recruiter? The job also states the teaching hours are 75 a month, but the hours are from 1.30-9pm Tues- Fri which works out at 120 hours per month and when I queried this with the recruiter he said that these hours include office hours and preparation time. The pay is 42000NTD per month and includes free accommdation. Also it states that if the teacher cannot attend a class for whatever reason, then 550NTD will be deducted from their salary for every hour of teaching they miss, so I presume that refers to sickness and is that usual in a contract?
I'd be grateful for any advice please!
Thank you,
Debbie Smile

Typical shiess recruiter job. Office hours are unpaid. It means you'll be sitting there doing nothing all day, and then teaching a few hours in the afternoon or whatever. Avoid recruiters. Why do you think he offered you the position so quickly? Because no-one wants to take it. I'm not trying to sound like a smarty pants, but seriously there's much better out there. 42k a month for 120 hours is 350NT an hour (7.7 GBP or $11.93 USD per hour... wow....). OK, they give you "free accommodation", but what is it? Sharing with someone else? A single room rat hole they smells like the barn animals have been in there? Smile You get the drift.

I've dealt with Bryan a few times, and have never found him to be dishonest. However, one must differentiate the recruiter from the potential employer. Even if the recruiter is honest, that doesn't mean the buxiban owner using him is.

Recruiters will always have clients looking for employees, so it's not surprising you got an offer right away. Remember, the recruiter is simply looking to fill a position, he is not necessarily looking to match the right person with the right job - in fact, in my experience recruiters never attempt to do that.

As for Jushan, it's a quiet little town in the foothills of the mountain range that runs down the middle of the island. Like all small towns in Taiwan, there's bugger all there. There is no train station and only limited bus service to Nantou, which itself has bugger all in it, no train station and limited bus service to Taichung.

If you have to go to a small town, make sure it is on the rail line or has reasonable bus service to one of the main cities (Taipei, Kaohsiung, or Taichung).

Many employers demand unpaid office hours. How many hours you wish to work for free is up to you. When I started out, I ruled out any employer where the office hours were more than 25% of the working hours. Now that I've been here for many years and have permanent residency, I don't do unpaid office hours period.

Let's crunch the numbers: 42 000 / 75 teaching hours = 560 per hour.

That's a bit low in my estimation, but it does seem to be the average these days. On the other hand, it does include accommodation. Be warned, free accommodation usually means a sub-standard, single room; what is known in North America as a bachelor apartment.

Let's be generous and say the accommodation is worth 5 000 per month:

47 000 / 75 = 627 per hour.

That's not bad, especially if you're a newbie. Now let's include the office hours they're demanding:

47 000 / 120 = 392 per hour. OUCH!

They're paying you 392 per hour to work, but deduct 550 per hour when you miss work. What a deal!

Bryan is already mentioned in the scams thread. When he posts he always has dozens of attractive full-time jobs listed, but the only gigs he can ever set up are part-time or with employers that have driven off a large number of their previous foreign employees.

If a school in Taiwan cannot find a teacher themselves who is already in Taiwan, the job is probably not very good. Would someone in your home country higher someone for a job that they have never met?

Thanks for all your replies and advice everyone!
I decided not to go for this job offer in the end with this recruiter - just had a gut instinct about it.
The job hunt continues......

Bryan Wu Rolling Eyes
I have had the misfortune of dealing with him a number of times via e-mail. He asks you for all your info, documents, CV etc and then wastes your time for weeks afterwards asking you the same questions over and over again. Questions he could have answered for himself if he'd taken the time to read the info you sent him at his request . Then he will just stop contacting you. At least that's been his typical M.O with me in the past. I now have him and everyone from Dewey on my 'blocked sender list'.
