"I just came from a class full of European law Phd students. If their ideas and biases are anything to go by, EU entry for Turkey is.......well, decades away at least."
I didn't realise that citizens' thought crime prevents EU membership. Sounds more like the Soviet Union. |

| Nobody stared at me, cause I could pass for a Turk (albeit a pasty one) but my black co-worker had people staring at him all the time, his family complained about this too. I don't think Turks are particularly racist however, the Italians and Spanish could take them to school on that one! |

My neighbor 3 doors down is a total *beep* and Groups of guys stay over with her roommate playing load music til 3 in the morning.. I live in the Uni district of Bursa. Here everyone smokes weed drinks too much and sleeps around... I met my boss today and he said all is ok... But I was like what the hell..
I was just having a good bye paryy before I went to Bulgaria.. It ruined my visa run as I had to spend the week to deal with their bull...I might try the old Chise trick and pay the sucker off... Any Ideas out there... This guy is cramping my lifestyle.... |

If your Turkish is up to it, I'd face up to the nosey b@stard and tell him to mind his own business ... it sounds like he's one of the finger-wagging types that like to lord it over us 'kafir's ... it's the only pathetic bit of power they've got, and boy do they cling to it ..
Unless you wake-up every morning face-down in the car-park in a pool of your own piddle , he can't possibly know you drink too much ... unless you guys regularly raise hell (like the families' kids do day-in day-out), he's just being a sad w@nker ...
If your boss isn't a finger-wagging type himself, he's probably even more dismissive of the idiot ... |

| I have an admission: I saw a family of Hassidic Jews on the street in Antalya and stopped and stared, just like everyone else. Female Russian tourists shopping in Kipa, Şok, Tansaş etc in just a bikini still get a reaction from the local males too. |

If you're white then there's really no comparison between here and Korea. You're talking about a country where you're a completely different race compared to a country where you're just a different ethnicity. Lots of Turks have roots in the Balkans so many of them have brown or even blond hair and are light skinned.
For people who aren't white then it sounds a lot like Korea. If you're good humored about it you can become popular with your differentness but it's got to be grating for sure. If you're outside of a tourist area once people find out you're foreign they're also very curious. Sometimes if I'm on the bus and I start speaking on the phone in English I see a lot of people turn heads.
I've seen Turks make comments about blacks and Asians. They'll call a black man 50 cent or when they see a Korean they'll make ching chong sounds. I think people just aren't used to being sensitive about race. The Ottoman Empire used to be very cosmopolitan and mixed but I think after nationalism it changed. People who were Circassian, Bosnian whatever mostly blended in and became Turks. Even before, people were mostly the same color except for the black eunuchs and a small number of turkish blacks elsewhere. |

The sultans used to have black eunuchs in the harem.
Honestly I've heard more negative comments about Arabs than about Armenians. If you make it clear that you yourself are not anti-Turk then probably it will be fine. Still, I imagine some Turks will be really eager to tell you the Turkish viewpoint about the Armenian issue and push you to agree with them. About Indians, I doubt there's a hatred of Indians but they probably have an idea that Indians are poor and dirty. Maybe if you tell them the mughals were descended from Turks. |

I never found staring to be an issue in Korea, at least not anytime within the last ten years.
I lived in Busan Korea in 1996-1997 and noticed it quite a bit. I went back again in 2000 and spent about half of that decade there, going in and out of Korea. Very little staring there these days.
That being said, there were certain foreigners who'd stare at everyone to see if anyone was starting at them. Those types seem to encounter the experience of being started at quite a bit. |
