I know, I know, this doesn't seem an appropriate topic for this forum, but just bear with me for a minute. Initially, the idea was for me to take a TEFL course and be on my way to Asia to teach English. However, the more I read about it, the more I realize, that even though my English is fluent, I won't be able to get a job in a decent school since I'm not a native English speaker (my accent is a dead giveaway) plus I have no experience in teaching. I do, however, have a B.Sci. degree from a university in Toronto and experience in IT field, where I had to give some instruction to both technical and non-technical staff. I reckon, there must be some positions for IT teachers and instructors who can teach in English in China, Korea or Taiwan.
Any ideas, feedback?
Thank you.

What is your accent and how pronounced is it? What is your ethnicity? These are factors in determining your marketability.

If you speak FRancais as i suspect may be the case, you could possible get a job teaching English and IT at the Institut de tecnologie in Phnom Penh Cambodia. it is a Fench funded institutiion that educates Cambodia Engineering students who need to learn English!!!

I guess my accent is prrretty harrrsh, though I, of course, can't hear it. And no, it's not French, it's Easterrrrn Eurrropean. Thing is, I would feel much more comfortable teaching IT rather than English.

Just North of Mt. Pleasant and Eglinton, as a matter of fact.

Well, i dont hear any accent. I'm afraid I don't know much about IT and ESL combined, but I'm certain there are such courses. I expect Hong Kong has colleges that teach them together.

Also, NGOs in various countries need IT experts, but usually on contract I think. In Phnom Penh, there used to be an acute shortage of IT people, probably still is. But I just don't know about long-term jobs.

Go leafs Go!

A contract job is exactly what I'm looking for, but it has to be in teaching since I am looking for experience to get into teachers' college.

I missed last night's game, but I hear they Went Leafs Went (4-1)

You're heading for teacher's college too, are you? Do you volunteer at any schools, like Northern Secondary? I'm thinking of doing that. I have a few loose ends I have to tie up too. I must say, I'm not enthusiastic about the odds of getting in in this province.

I used to work in IT before TEFL.
Realistically I think if an Asian school is teaching IT in English, they can hire a local person who knows IT very well but speaks accented English for much cheaper than they can hire you.

You probably can get teaching work there - but teaching "business English" at a private language rather than IT.

khmerhit: No I am not volunteering anywhere yet. The whole idea just occured to me last week. Frankly, I am a bit tired of IT and have no passion for it, whereas teching I think I would enjoy much more. So yes, you are right, I should try it first by volunteering. If Northern Secondary is the school at Mt. Pleasant and Eglinton then I am looking at it as I write this (it's kinda dark and I can't really see it)

ls650: I actually found a link on Dave's website:
http://www.eslcafe.com/joblist/index.cgi?read=7767
That's what I am looking for. I submitted an application, but haven't heared from them yet.

I hope you find the kind of job you're looking for. Good luck!

With only 6 weeks left in my contract I've been looking for a new TEFL job in Latin America (preferably in Mexico), but these locations just don't seem to post much on the Internet. Neutral
