Im currently teaching in Chiang Mai, Thailand. As the end of the school year is soon approaching. Ive been thinking of teaching in Vietnam (more specifically Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi) to see if there are better career opportunities as well as ability to save money.

I could arrive in Vietnam in mid April, Ideally I would like a short term/6 month contract, are there many about?

I want to go home back to England in the latter part of the year. The problem is Ill stay in London and I wouldnt mind going back home with an extra 1000 dollars or so, would it be possible to save much in a 6 month time frame. Bare in mind all the start up costs Id likely incur with visas and transport etc.

Your input would be greatly appreciated

I got a six-month contract with ILA in HCMC.

I'd insist on it if I were you. The full year contract is salaried, but comes with strings. Lots of strings.

Entirely possible to save $1,000. That's exactly what I left the country with after six months. Lived like a king while I was there, too.

A full year contract gives the power and control over to the school.

I don't see the benefit of being salaried, except that fact that during the Tet holiday you get a full paycheck.

To each their own.

You can earn just as much, by not being full-time, and you have the choice to work for someone else if there is a problem.

I don't think ILA gives a bonus for the one-year completion, but perhaps they now do.

Someone can add that information.

Nothing wrong with a short-term contract. Better yet, is to not to a contract at all.

Thanks for your input guys. Sounds like I could have a rewarding experience both culturally and financially.

How easy is to find work without a contract? I am a fully legal teacher in Thailand and although I was lucky to get assistance with all the paperwork I would rather avoid it in Vietnam as I'll only be there for a relatively short period of time.

Go to Vietnam with a tourist visa and work without a contract, is that possible? Am I likely to be thrown out and blacklisted?
