Is Lima safe for travel at the moment ? I used to live there and there were always dodgy parts but a friends says its got worse recently - is this true ? |

I lived in Lima from 6/07 - 3/08, and returned for a visit in 6/10. I actually felt safer in El Centro the second time around, seems there's a construction boom that's gradually bringing streetlights and reputable commerce to previously dark and intimidating stretches of street. I felt as if a greater % of El Centro was available to me as a pretty obvious North American. That lingering % that *isn't* available, though...still rather dodgy.
I can't speak for the rest of the city. |

Things usually get worse. If you-re street smart and avoid the bad areas, you should be fine. |
