Aside from the major cities like Saigon, Nha Trang, Can Tho, what are some cities or towns with English schools and supermarkets?

I love Nha Trang, but I wouldn't work in a school there. Unless it has all changed in the last year or so, there is apparently only one English language school in the entire city and the pay is abysmal. I knew a lady who worked there and to suplement her income she tried to do private lessons. Even privates were thin on the ground and poorly paid.

I've heard of a guy (I've meet him but he wasn't teaching back then) who is apparently teaching conversational English to hotel staff at Phu Quoc Island during the low season. He's apparently working four hours a day, five days a week, living for free in a five star resort on a beautiful tropical island (meals included) and earning about $1,000 US a month Cool Although he had an advantage in being very well-known amongst the locals on the island, with a bit of legwork and door knocking, I don't see why it would be impossible for other people to get a gig like this. I am actually a little tempted myself Smile

Don't go packing your bags just yet. There are only about 10 or so hotels on the whole island of Phu Quoc and only one above a two star.

I was at Phu Quoc about four months ago and there are quite a few more hotels and resorts, some of which are in the 'high-end category', than what you stated.

http://www.vietnamhotels.biz/phuquoc.htm

Plus they are in the process of making the airport accessible internationally and there exists an expectation, whether rightly or wrongly, that Phu Quoc will really start to take off as a tourist destination. A year or so ago there wasn't a single paved road anywhere on the island and now the roads there are much better than in Saigon or Hanoi. Whether the island becomes the next 'in thing' or not we will have to wait and see, but many seem to be banking on it. I saw quite a few new hotels and resorts being built while I was there. Once they are finished they would also definitely be in the 'high-end' category as well.

I just mentioned Phu Quoc as an example, which I know of, of the opportunities that may be available for people who want to teach in Vietnam and not live in the major cities (or places where there are no language schools). Or, if there are language school in the town, the pay is so bad you are almost a 'volunteer'. It is absolutely true that places like this only have a tiny TEFL market, but that's not the same as saying that no potential market exists at all. Something like this is a form of self-employment so there is a greater risk of failure. Also you would have to be the sort of person capable of good networking and being able to sell yourself well. I am not in a financial position to attempt it, so no plans to "pack my bags yet" Crying or Very sad But, if I somehow was able to get a deal like the one I mentioned in my previous post, I would be out of Saigon in a heartbeat Cool

thanks guys, I hadn't thought about Vung Tau... I definitely would welcome a beach town- less mosquitoes!! yay! aside from those franchise schools, how many smaller schools are there in town? Or do franchise schools usually pay best?

Are there any schools in Da Lat?
(I would prefer a school that was a part of a larger franchise, but mom and pop will do)

and btw, I don't have a CELTA, just a 120 hour TESOL from the states, so I don't know if ILA or Apollo would consider me... especially hearing how many of their own graduates don't get hired.
