Now I've been reading through these posts and I'd just like to say that you should really go for it while you're young.
If you're serious about teaching in any way, then teaching and travel can be a great learning curve and one of life's greatest experiences.
I used to be a blond, Barbie, bimbo and a size 6 when I first started teaching. I travelled the world and enjoyed myself before returning home (and falling for a fresh-faced teacher of religion. Well, he's now serving time for fraud and I guess it was one of my biggest mistakes but I can look back with no regrets.Being a Christian charitable woman, I still visit him once a month ..... and maybe flash my diamond rings under his nose that my latest husband Hubert gave me). Well, we all make mistakes. So, don't let it worry you. You have to give it a try!
I enjoyed my time in teaching. You might find later on that you want to learn more yourself and you can do further studies. Remember, you can do anything once you set your mind to it.
My biggest problem today is remembering the date for my next cosmetic surgery! But, what the heck, I was walking down the boulevarde the other day and someone asked me if I was Anna Nicole Smith! (I knew that new hot pink Spandex would work!)
Good luck!

A psychoanalytically revealing post, really! Not that I find it "interesting", far from it, but it does say a few things about the type of person that should NOT be put in front of a gaggle of foreign students studying English!

What exactly have you learnt abroad? How to forget your appointments with the beautician? Or how many partners you have had so far?
As said above, really revealing...

Dear Roger,
maryam has, perhaps, never even been abroad, although she's always been a broad - or at least I think she has. These days, one never knows, especially on the Net.
Regards,
John

Well, I've been reading Maryam's posts and from what I can see, they are a little off beat but generally positive and funny. I don't think any of her posts are meant to be taken seriously.
I don't think that she deserved those comments from you guys especially that last nasty remark or innuendo - if you could call it that. It was just a cheap shot!
I'd join Maryam at the beauticians anyday just to exchange a few stories.

It makes more sense to start young. EFL is a totally different experience if you have dependents.

Age doesn't seem to have much to to with dependencies.

Yes, why assume that just because you're not 20 anymore, you'll be carrying Dependent Baggage??

"Dependant Baggage" ?

If you mean partner and children you are being offensive.

So do I. Unless you're the goddess Athena and you sprang fully formed, armed and armoured from your father's head, yelling a battle cry; then you were once "dependant baggage" that someone cared for.

I know one EFLer who began at age 66. And another that began at age 71. And I know a few people who are neither fresh faced nor elderly who EFL. And they have families.

The OP was a troll anyway.

yikes, apologies! I meant to be light about the 'baggage'
It wasn't meant In All Seriousness, guys.....
I think most of you would concur that ESL is tougher if you've got families.....AND I think there was a thread that discussed pretty thoroughly different personal feelings about having children. Yes, I happen to be One Person who doesn't personally want them - hence, my reaction to the suggestion that, just because you're "older" you're necessarily going to have spouse and children.
I'll try to be very clear here: I have the greatest respect for everybody's personal choice. Those of you who are raising children are Great. So are those of us who choose not to.
Ok, my digression from the original (light) topic ends here!!
