Well yeah, if you drink and eat a lot of the stuff you mentioned (gonna guess there was lots of fried chicken, etc involved), then your waist will expand. I count beer in the "eating bad foods" category, since it has quite a bit of calorie and not any real positive value.
Drink and eat bad stuff in low moderation and you'll be fine. Also, just cause everyone else in Japan smokes (and it's cheaper to buy them here), doesn't mean you have to. I still maintain that you have to work at it to gain a lot of weight. |
I've noticed that foreign women tend to get heavier while lots of the boys waste away (particularly guys that come over here with a bit of muscle . . . it's hard to maintain proper protein levels without spending a lot of money).
Japanese fast food aside, Japanese food (お総菜 osouzai) in general contains lots of sugar. Buy a bento from any conbini or bento-joint (Originbento for example) and you'll taste it. That plus lots of simple/processed carbs, vegetable/canola oils, mayonnaise, and sodium . . . it's not the healthiest. The biggest difference between most Japanese, westerners, and waistlines is calorie consumption. |

It was quite the opposite when I was teaching eikaiwa- two of the female teachers at our branch, who were not big to begin with, ended up with borderline eating disorders, presumably because they felt bigger here than they did at home.
Half of the guys meanwhile soon developed beer guts due to regular all-nighters in Roppongi. Guys I know working in finance here seem to be the worst with the big guts for some reason, while all the IT guys are skinny. |

Maybe it's job or salary related?
I lived at a gaijinhouse for 3 some years, and noticed the trend. Most of the folks moving in and out were either on a working holiday visa, a student visa, or came as a tourist. It seemed like nearly every Asian, most Italians and some French put on +5kgs. Always eating sweets and what have you.
Typically the guys would drink a lot, but even then they weren't eating properly and lost lots of weight while putting on some pudge (probably from muscle loss?). When I came back here, I lost about 6 kgs of muscle and shocked my body into storing fat around my abs and love handles region. Luckily I was able to burn that off, but I wasn't able to completely recover my muscle loss. |

Ah, yes, "vacation eating". I've been doing that for several months already, hence my current predicament. Ain't gonna lie: it was awesome!
Even during my brief vacation in Japan years ago, I could definitely tell that the individual mentalities of the expat crowd affected their health (I boarded with them). You could tell who some of the partiers were, ifyouknowwhatImean. That's what I'm hoping to NOT do. Heh. |
