From my personal experience living and teaching in Mexico City for the past two and a half years, I would say that it's VERY important for newbies who are thinking about getting into the EFL profession to have the following.

CELTA

After this the experience and then one or even two masters that are in Education and or TESOL specifically.

Have advanced degrees from people who have actually accomplished something teaching you their wisdom is CRITICAL. Plus, having a CELTA and a masters or two shows serious employers (Asia and the Middle East) that YOU are serious about the EFL profession. True, long term goals but they will benefit you greatly in the future.
Keep your future in mind not just the next party.

Shiny bits of paper are great if you're going to work in a private uni or place where they pay according to the quantity of said shiny bits of paper. Other than that it's probably a better idea to spend the time networking rather than studying. I don't think I'd study here having worked in what passes for an education system for a number of years. Just what would my degree be worth? Especially outside of Mexico.

I make about 5 times what I make when I got here 5 or so years ago but I don't have a single extra qualification. Not knocking studying, but studying as a means to make more money in Mexico is probably not the most productive way to do it, unless you're opting for a career change out of tefl.

That's a big picture joker. Took up half of my screen. RIP Heath Ledger.
