| A good rule of thumb is that you don't want to be paying more than a third of your after-tax income in housing costs- that goes for any job or location really. |
I'm lucky. My rent is only about one ninth of my after tax income and I'm only an ALT. I remember I walked in to the Mini mini in the town where I live and asked what was the cheapest thing they had without any key money. Surprisingly there were a lot of 1DK places for under 25,000 a month. But I live in a small town.
I have a friend who did pretty much the same thing in Nagoya and she got a 1DK in Sakae for 44,000 no Key Money. And it's less than a 10 minute walk from the station.
The housing market is actually hurting in Japan at the moment because of the lingering effects of the economic crisis. Try a fudoyasan like Mini mini. Just go with a friend who can speak good Japanese and you can figure out what your options are. Never go with what your company offers unless it is subsidized by the company or city you are working for. Well, sometimes them paying the key money helps, but in the long run you lose out. |

| I heard 20%. Either way. Wouldn't want to be over 30% though. |

I'm not too certain how big or small my current place is. It's a Leopalace though. I have this one room, then out in the corridor is the "cooking area", as I call it, and in the other part the toilet, a washer, and the bathroom. Make of it what you will. It may be 26m squared (like another poster mentioned).
The main thing I do dislike, is the fact that I have no cooking space, one cabinet above, and a very small sink. I would like a bigger place so that I can have a proper kitchen area, where I can do all my preparation there as opposed to coming into this main room (where there is tatami) to do stuff like that. I'm always accidentally dropping or spilling something. It would also be nice if I had a place for my rice cooker. I have to do that in this room too.
If I'm lucky, and if I do end up in Sapporo in April, maybe I can manage to get a bigger place at a reasonable, affordable price. |
