Most of the great social movements have been fought over decades or centuries and at times with great leadership (King, Ghandi, too many to list). Conciousness about issues shift, conditions change and so on as does any struggle for change. |
Good examples, but as the original post was about employment conditions, (King & Gandhi were fighting for much bigger issues!) that is down to economic and political strategy, and is achievable in a much shorter period if it is tackled at grassroots level, as was proven by the aforementioned lady.
As someone who lived through the chaos in the UK in the 1970s, when British industry was riddled with bad products and union-led poor industrial relations, a legacy of Clement Atlee's nationalization project, it's not difficult to be influenced politically by an administration that in one decade tranformed a culture and an economy, by privatization and crushing of the unions. |

Yes, I think we may be responding to different thngs out of the original post. Aside from that, there's a pretty circular argument on this that goes nowhere quickly - I've got a good union example, you've got a bad one, I've got a good one etc. etc. etc.
As you probably know, King was killed in Memphis while there to support stiking janitors and numerous writers say he was as concerned about labor issues as racial issues. I guess it's possible to seperate broader issues of fairness from labor theoretically, but I don't know if it happens very often in the real world.......
I enjoyed the chat! Lots to think about going on in the UK these days no? Europe in general...hell, even the Mid-East! |
