Hello! Has anyone taught at one of the universities on Hainan Province? If so, how did you like it? I'm looking at one in Haikou and one in Danzhou. Any impressions/insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know any school on Hainan, but I have been to Hainan a number of times.
If your contract is as good as any contract from any other university then go for it. Hainan will reward you with one of the very few relatively unspoilt landscapes in China. It is a lot less densely populated, and a lot greener and cleaner, with very few industries.
However, it also is somewhat less well developed, and official venality is rampant. I have never heard of complaints from teachers, but I do know how this may affect businesspeople.
I never liked Haikou; it's drab and uninspiring and overpopulated, but maybe this is what you want. Luckily, it's not too big a city. |

Drab and uninspiring doesn't do much for me, but thanks--this is all helpful information. I've been oscilating between there and an offer in Chengdu. I want to make up my mind within the next couple weeks so I'm trying to collect as much information as I can get.

I don't have any specific information about schools in Hainan, but someone posted some general info about Hainan province that you might find enlightening over on my message board. You can check it out here:

the university in Haikou is a nice rather shabby version of some Florida (USA) univers. the staff is ok. the FAO seems to have their act together. the students bright and perceptive
BUT
be warned this is a tourist destination for the Chinese to visit the Hawaii/Bali of China. hords of them by the busload. visits to plastic pretend villages. pearl factories. and some of the most outrageous touist clothes you have ever seen.
just when you think that mu-mus and grass skirts are funny - along comes the Chinese Sanya outfits.
yes, I bought some. they make great gifts.
BUT
you are on an island. only the boat and air to get off.
BUT
they grow coffee there. it is strong and cheap.
aloha! |
