I have just received word from my dispatch company that the BoE does not want to renew the contract with my dispatch company at the end of July 2011. My company made a contract with them 3 years ago. Hence, I can walk at the end of my current contract, which ends in March. Or I can renew for a few more months.

I am not too saddened by the turn of events. The truth is that I had planned to return to the US in 2012 to pursue an MBA even though I am aware that GChultu thinks MBAs granted by US schools other than the Ivy League are worthless.

I do have a GMAT test in Osaka in May and a girlfriend to consider. She had planned to move with me next year. My dispatch company has told me that I will be eligible for unemployment insurance. Since I came back to Japan in July 2008, I will be eligible for whatever payment I can get from shakai hoken.

Any CONSTRUCTIVE advice or suggestions welcome.

Obvious first question - who is the BoE using for the new contracts? I guess one of four options; JET, another dispatch company, direct-hires in Japan or direct-hires from a sister city in another country (or similar). Two of those give you possibilities to stay longer. Is that something you want to do?

Also, you should know that you may not be able to claim your lump sum pension payment once you go back home if you collect unemployment. The wording is fuzzy and no one can really agree how unemployment insurance is related to pension, but this is the advice printed in the handbook. The handbook knows all.

OJF, I have already done JET recently. I was discussing my situation with my girlfriend, and I told her I had a hunch that a former JET who runs an eikaiwa near Sendai-I am in Sendai and work in the countryside-might have gotten the contract. The trouble is that another Canadian who works part-time with my company knows this former JET, and I have a feeling he would be in the lead to get the full-time contract because the Canadian is on good terms with this former JET who runs the eikaiwa.

I really do not want to move to another part of Japan for less than a year. However, if I can find a gig that does not require the use of a car in the Tohoku area near Miyagi, then I am open to that. Absent that, I will probably leave Japan this year either with or without the shakai hoken payment.

pinksweater, I think I still have my JET booklet about shakai hoken. I will have to dig it out.

After talking with the GF, I have decided to stay until the end of July and then go from there. This way I will have a little bit more time to prepare should I decide to leave Japan this year.

No, it isn't. Unemployment insurance is completely separate from pension. Different names, different deductions, different bodies administering them. You can claim both. Anyone that says differently is talking out their arse. (& I can't see anything in the pension book mentioning it, btw)
