Short stories I need em. I am teaching at a middle school, and we are going to do a short story contest. Well the kids are going to enter, anyways. I have been unable to find many suitable stories that are 2-3 minutes in length. Many of the stories are kinda rude, or really dont make a lot of sense. One, I did find, Wooden Bowls is pretty good. If you guys could suggest some more, I would really appreciate it.

Are you talking about a recitation of short stories, or do you want a model for writing short stories?

A simple web search turned up Aesop's Fables - http://aesopfables.com/

I saw someof Aesop's, a bit too hard, a lot of old grammar and words.
They will be reciting the poems/short stories. So something that is 3-4 mins would be great.

A lot of the poems too are junk. Most of them are really odd. Written by teens who are mad at the world. Wish I could find some decent ones Crying or Very sad

You would have to adapt the Aesop's fables, of course. It'll take you some effort.

Poetry? Try Dickinson, H.D., e e cummings, Edward Arlington Robinson, Robert Frost....The American poets wrote in simple English.

Bartleby.com has many poems listed. You ought to see.

What about your students' textbooks? In the ones that my JHS use, they have some short stories in them.

Anyway, one student of mine I had recite Puff the Magic Dragon. That was in the 2 -3 minute time limit, but unfortunately, the JTE mixed up the time limit for the ichinensei student and the ninensei student. The ichinensei should've had the story I picked for the ninensei and vice-versa for the ichinensei student. The ninensei student's story was too short, while the ichinensei student's was too long.

Anyway, I'd check the students' texts too. There maybe something there you can use.

I try to find something familiar with them like Japanese folklore (like Momotarou) or a classic Anime. For instance, I used the Prince of Tennis (Tenipuri) plot as a short story and it was a hit. However, I think I was in a baseball town at the time so using Touch would probably be better Wink

How about fairytales... Disney stories? Disney is big in Japan, and if you can't find short summaries of the plots, I'm pretty sure that you could write your own. For example...

Snow White was a beautiful girl. She lived with her father, and her stepmother, the Queen. The Queen was jealous of Snow White - she wanted to be as beautiful as Snow White. She decided that Snow White had to die.
She sent a huntsman into the forest with Snow White to kill her. But, he couldn't do it. He cried and told Snow White the truth. Then, he told her to run.
She ran through the forest. She was scared. After a long time, she found a small cottage.
She went into the cottage, and saw that it was untidy. Then she noticed seven small beds.
"Oh, children live here!" she said, surprised. "But there are no big beds... do they have no parents??"
She decided to clean the house. After that, she was very tired, so she fell asleep on one of the beds.
Later, the seven dwarves who lived in the cottage came home and found Snow White. They were surprised. But, when she woke up, she became friends with them. The dwarves loved Snow White.
One day, the dwarves were at work. An old woman came to the door, selling apples.
"Try just one bite of this delicious apple," said the old woman.
Snow White tried the apple, and fell down. The apple was poisoned! The old woman was the Queen in disguise!
The dwarves came home and saw Snow White on the floor. They were very upset. She was so beautiful that they did not bury her.
One day, a handsome prince came to the cottage. When he saw Snow White, he kissed her because she was so beautiful. Suddenly, she woke up! The spell was broken! Snow White and the Prince lived happily ever after.

Is that too long? I'm sure you could do the same for any story that you know.

You're welcome. Perhaps I could type up a few simplified stories, dialogues and fake articles and link you all to them. Anyone want to contribute?

that'd be great. Can make a database here for all teachers.

Here is mine.

Treehouse of Dreams

Pulling my way up the rusty log chain I was surprised anything was left of the old treehouse. As I sat listening to birds chirp, my mind drifted back to the day it all started, my eleventh birthday.

I was eleven years old. My older brother started making a treehouse for me in the tree near the raspberry patch. Wanna build a treehouse up there?" My eyes glinted with the thought of a treehouse towering above everyone.

Before I was eleven, the old elm tree was just a tree. Soon, it would be spectacular. We made the treehouse. It had a metal chain, to climb. The treehouse was two stories, and it even had window. Being eleven, this was amazing!
Climbing up,I looked about in awe. Brother followed a few seconds later with a big grin on his face. The view was fantastic! Even though it was no more than 15 feet up in the air, it felt more like 100 feet. It was a kids perfect dream!

My brothers, my friends and I played in the treehouse all that summer. We had many adventures, and sometimes just relaxed in the treehouse. But as we got older, other things came into our lives. The treehosue was used less and less, until it was just a regular tree again. Seeing it now, just the chain and a few boards, but I can remember the treehosue and all the fun I had with my brothers and friends.
