Went away on a holiday. Thought about what Vietnam has to offer me after so many years and decided to stay away.
Pollution, inflation, incivility, rip-offs, loud mouths a plenty, cars with drivers who are so ignorant and selfish, spitting, peeing in public, criminals in uniforms, corruption so rampant and open its disgraceful, Queue cutting, rip-off taxi drivers, employers with rapacious appetites and tight wallets.
Time for a change. Civility, clean air and water, and a sensible salary in a safe neighbourhood far outweigh the "adventure" of living in the country with (officially) the worlds highest rate of fraud.
Something to be proud of? First in fraud and first in piracy of intellectual property. (Any one ever seen a photocopied text-book?)
Good bye and good riddance. I have a lot of friends I am so sorry for because they do not have the choice. |

Jesus, Snolly.....you've been here for a WHILE!!!
So NOW who are newbies and other people gonna lean on when they need answers??
I wish you best of travels, my friend. As soon as my spouse's paperwork gets cleared and finalised from the Government of my nation of origin (maybe around mid-summer), I'll be right behind ya on the way out!! |

I dont think I was ever all that influential in the ESL scene in Vietnam, however, I DO l know of a number of people who will heave a sigh of relief that I wont be back soon. Mostly the rip-off merchants I have occassionally taken to task.
Its a shame to have to say some of them were foreigners too-people like a criminal in my country who opened a school in Vietnam-guilty in the courts and he opens a school! A teacher cant get a job with such a record, but undesirables can open a school- Somethings wrong! Guess it goes with the territory of being in the Language mill business- If you're not crooked, it unlikely you will survive in Vietnam.
Anyway-most sensible people will survive-so long as they keep- their eyes open and realize that MOST of the schools in Vietnam are out to screw them. Being screwed has a price. |

Snollygoster,
I will miss you and your valuable input. Thank you for helping me in the past. I know what you say is honest and correct.
As for me, I have been here for many years like you and I think it is time I to go. I hate to say it but I thought I could make a difference. Even if it was small. I was so wrong.
I have lived very well while living here but there was a price.
I am a good guy who tried to follow the Golden Rule. Stupid me. There is no one to blame but myself. I knew better but thought I was smarter. Lesson learned.
The sad thing is I am beginning to act like them and think like them. It is time for a change.
Best wishes for you and your family.
Best regards Snolly ! |

Snolly...
Well, maybe not influential ...but ya DID answer a lot of questions (and answered them quite accurately).......and helped several people out!
....yeah, sadly, a few Tay teachers DO pick up some of the more unsavoury aspects of the culture around here and they apply it in their dealings with BOTH, Viet AND Tay.
You goin' back home or to a different nation to teach? |

Not going home just yet. Will do that when I can get the pension.
To another nation but not to teach as in being in a class-room and getting kids to repeat some inane stupidity like "hi how are you?" "I'm fine" whilst crying about a broken leg.
No! a much more satisfying position that actually DOES make a difference, and that I can feel good about.
No more waking up to the sound of loud mouths harking up gollies outside my bed-room window-in fact I can hear the birds singing as I write-window open and clean fresh air flowing in-not a dog meat stand in sight, and people walking around greeting each other warmly. Cant hear a motor-bike. Beach nearby, and there are no used daipers floating around-the beach is clean, the water is clear, and the only rubbish is actually IN the bins provided. No seriously out of tune karaoke wanna be Elvises to shatter the quiet at ear-splitting volume- just the sound of my wife singing quietly in the background from sheer joy of having "escaped" from hell.
In comparison to what I left behind, its heaven.
No night work- no split shifts, and week-ends free-Yep- its gotta be a step up. |

I can see your point with the rest of the post, but I'm curious why this is an issue. I had the impression you were well beyond the language mill kind of teaching. |

Got a link for that?
Unrelated, what is Cleverlearn going to do now?
Good luck. I hope to leave soon, too. |

Fraud? No link- just ask the Embassies of Australia, USA Canada etc, who keep files on such things via their Immmigration Depts- Viets often apply for visa for such countries, and such info is on hand. Definately the highest incidence of fraud in visa applications from all over the world.
What is Cleverlearn going to do now? Why should I know what Cleverlearn are going to do now? Maybe you think I work there-Sorry-No. |

Ah! Vung Tau- One of the few acceptable places in Vietnam for humans.
However, I question the idea of cleanliness. I seem to recall lots of sewerage spewing down the river and dirtying the beaches, lots of used diapers in the "surf". Not to mention the oil slicks that appear, sometimes the water at Long Hai is covered with oil.
I also recall lots of "Party" boys taking "study" tours away from their wives in Vung Tau and partnering up with the considerable number of ladies of questionable virtue and health who seem to do good business there.
These are the same people who drink more beer than they can handle in a show of "boyish" bravado, and vomit everywhere whilst staggering around with cigarettes blowing their foul breath over all and sundry, slurring their speech, and peeing their pants. Seen it first hand. Then lets all go and sing Karoake so loud and so badly out of tune that it makes sober people want to vomit.
Ah! Vung Tau where the hotels dont give tooth-brushes-they give condoms to their clients.
I guess even hell must have one or two places where things are acceptable- Vietnam has Vung Tau. |

Well, what would one expect from the usual suspects, when people are leaving or have left Vietnam, it's standard to hear that the locals are not humans, disinformation about the country etc, and giving no details on where they are going- it is of course better than Vietnam-the grass is always greener on the other side?
But one of the most interesting aspects of most of these teachers leaving Vietnam is that most of them return within one or two years MOD EDIT
Snolly you will be back, just like the others- see ya soon! |
