I have just begun a new job Saudi Arabia where the KSA forum of this site is blocked, so I'm hoping some kindly UAE colleagues might be willing and able to help me and that the moderators will be understanding of my need to post a KSA-related question is the UAE forum.

Many of the guys here in KSA use Skype, so apparently the program itself is not blocked. My problem is that when I go t the main Skype website and click "download" the site instantly switches to Arabic. Worse yet, there isn't the customary button to click to switch back to English.

No matter what I do, I can't get around this. I tried CNET, but that didn't work either--same problem.

Any ideas?

Get a VPN. Once logged in from a proxy in the civilized world, you can access SKYPE and other blocked sites with no problem.

The message you are getting is probably a message to say the site is blocked.

What you need is a VPN, some are free but dont work that well, in other words cant really use them for skype.

You have to purchase a VPN, you either pay for a monthly fee or a yearly fee. I use one in the UAE and all others i know using other VPN's are having problems ith skype, expect me. So it pays to pay for one then get a free one!

Send me a PM with your email address and i will send you a link.

VPNs are good to have, but all of the advice can be rendered moot if you download and install Skype BEFORE entering backwards-looking nations. Using it is never a problem except in those circumstances in the U.A.E. where its usage is detectable and the connection is slowed down so much that it becomes unuseable at times.

Load it up before going and keep a separate copy of the installation program in case you face a disk failure/format need.

Not really even if you have it before it's still blocked hence having to use a VPN. the issue is that the telecoms charge too much for oversea calls, whereas Skype eats into the revenue. That's why Skype is banned. OK back to the point need to use Skype then get a VPN no other choice

Agreed. I use a VPN I pay for. It's a magic pill so far. I hope a lot of people in Libya and China (for that matter) use them too.

Skype is not blocked by the Saudi authorities.

I use it (English version) in Saudi Arabia all the time, with no problems. Some network providers do block Skype, however. That was the case for me, so I contacted my network provider (in this case my employer), told them of the problem, and Skype was unblocked within minutes.
