Hi folks
I was wondering if any of you guys knew of simple but decent accomodation I could stay in in Mexico City for just a few days? Also, it would need to be a place that is English language friendly ie, I can book it in Enlgish without having to hope my crude Spanish gets it right. Any ideas? |

There are lots of reasonably priced hotels in the centre of DF, one is the Congreso, coming out of metro Allende, you walk to Allende street, and it is to your right, a block or a block and a half away. It is about 230 pesos a night, very clean. Or if you get off at Metro Revolution or Hidalgo there are lots of inexpensive hotels. Cinco de Mayo street off the zocalo will have more English speaking people but a bit more expensive. If you want to speak English, there is a hostel behind the cathedral to the left. |

I know a clean, quiet hotel that you can rent a room on the top floor for $70 US per week. PM me for details. |

Yeah, but the area around Revolucion and Hidalgo can be a little hairy at night if you dont know the area, you can go from an OK area to a not OK area very quickly. Also, on Allende about 3 blocks south (the name changes to Bolivar) is the Hotel Principal, they speak some English. The Congreso is a good choice too. If you are coming in through the TAPO, there is a very nice hotel that is around 250 pesos, they get a fair number of tourists so I think there is some English spoken. Its called Faja de Oro. Marble lobby, it would be double the price if it were downtown. |

I have stayed at Principal. Not too keen on it personally. A bit noisy and too much time downtown can get depressing- to me. If I were you I would look into staying at hostel in a nice area like Condesa. Everything is just a metro ride away anyway. |

I usually stay in the area around Revolution and Hidalgo that has already been mentioned. I started going there when a friend was managing the Casa de los amigos hostel there. When she left I moved into the cheap hotels in the area. The Oxford being my favorite, but I've also stayed at the Carolton, when the Oxford was full and the Friedmont when attending British Council events held at the Melia Hotel one block away. |

Second the Oxford...great place. If full, there are plenty of other inexpensive hotels in the area around it. |

If I were to fly down, are there any particular taxi services from the Airport I should avoid? I don't want to jump into a random taxi only to have a gun stuffed in my mouth. |

There are official taxis that you prepay inside the terminal. They dont have meters and you pay by the zone you are going to. I dont remcomend just taking a random taxi on the street. Or, if you prefer, I have a taxi driver neighbor who I have known for many years, who will pick you up, meet you with a little sign with your name on it and everything, and take you to your hotel. Also, flat rate. PM me if that interests you. |

Airport taxis are supposed to be safer but that doesn't mean much if you get a gun to the side of your head at a stoplight... Yes, it does happen. |
