It seems that Middle Eastern Despot is not quite such a desirable vocation as it used to be:

Keep the helicopters fueled and ready, boys.

Another report of the protest on the Globe roundabout by Lulus hypermarket in Sohar is available at... http://www.muscatdaily.com/Archive/Stories-Files/Protests-in-Sohar-Salalah/(language)/eng-GB

Evidently there was a sit-inin Salalah, too.

The Sultan has taken several steps in response to these protests.

I hear from friends that there are 'peaceful demonstrations' called for tomorrow around the country - in Muscat near the airport. Unlike other leaders, the Sultan seems to be working to try to keep things together. I hear that he went to Sohar today. Things have been quite thoroughly covered by Oman TV from what I read today. Can anyone confirm that?

I suspect... that Sultan Q may be the first to accept a constitutional monarchy. Because he has no siblings, children, or spouses, he has no strong reason to cling to power. He may be of an age where he can accept just passing the problems on to some sort of government... and let them try to fix the issues.

Purely speculating, of course... but he has always impressed me as a man of intelligence and common sense.

For relevant, up-to-date information on the protests in Oman, these sources are good.

Al Jezeera showed some film of "not so peaceful" demonstrations from Monday. They said 6 more have been killed in Sohar and mentioned a burning mall ... but didn't say where it was.

Off to check your links...

Interesting details... in there... liked that the Salaleh "demonstration" has changed its name to a "sit-in" and the suggestion to send them cookies. (she must have studied in the US) It will be interesting to hear what the Sultan says if the rumor of his speech this evening (there) is true.
