Hello,

I'm new to the forum but have lurked for a considerable amount of time. I'm a Brit living in Japan since 2002, married to a Japanese. No kids. I have 6 years of teaching experience, 2 of them post CertTESOL (Trinity). I'm currently studying for the DipTESOL (Trinity), which I hope to complete by the beginning of next year. After that, I would like to go on and do an MA in TESOL/Applied Linguistics from a UK University via distance learning.

My wife and I are getting tired of Japan; and I feel there's a limit to growing professionally here. With that in mind, we are really interested in Vietnam as a place we could possibly move to, and work in. Most of my experience is in ESP, and teaching government employees.

My questions are these:
- What kind of salary could a dedicated teacher (DipTESOL holder) realistically expect?
- In terms of paper-work, is it doable for mixed nationality couples to move to Vietnam?
- Are there any resources/forums other than Dave's where I can find out about jobs and life there?
- Is it possible for Japanese people to find non-teaching work in Vietnam (fluent in English).

I would be very grateful of any answers that could be given. Obviously we will visit the country first, before we make any decisions but we wanted to get the take of people there first.

Thanks in advance!

PG

My situation is similar to yours. I have MA TESOL and ~ 7 years experience including lots of ESP & gov't corporate.

I came here a couple of weeks ago with my (Korean) wife as she got a job at an int'l school. On the back of that, I got a business visa (3 months at a time, renewable). Her employer deals with the paperwork though which simplifies things.

I live in Koreatown and there are loads of Korean multi-nationals here. I'm not sure whether there's a Japantown here but depending on your wife's experience I suppose she could get a job with a Japanese company? It would undoubtedly help if she learned Vietnamese...

From what I've seen, jobs range from $1500 - $2500, with the majority clustered at the lower end of the scale. One opportunity lies in some of the bigger language schools which hire native-speaking admin, managers, and trainers. I've had not luck with them even with basic teaching jobs though. They won't even give me an interview.
