As usual, it seems that there are different rules in different places. Last year, due to some dithering on the part of my new employer who decided to wait until there was only one day left on my RP, I was placed in an uncomfortable situation.
When we went to get the new RP, I was refused due to an incorrect stamp on my reference letter from my previous employer in a different city (stamped with school stamp instead of employing company). The first officer refused my request for an L visa, but the shift supervisor over-rode her decision and issued a one-month L. After the new ref letter arrived, we went back and converted the L to a new RP. This was in Shanghai.
Lessons learned:
1. Don't let your boss dither
2. Check the stamp
3. Watch out for officers who seem to be denying all applicants (I noticed this one woman was refusing all comers) and wait for a different one
4. Try to calmly talk to the supervisor if you feel you have a chance
5. It is possible to convert an L to an RP in Shanghai without a visa run

zed's dead, baby! you've got a residence permit. if that expires and you
get an L-visa, you're nothing but a tourist.
you can look for a job, apply for a job while on a tourist visa, but you
can't legally work. gotta get another z-visa.
you don't change one visa to another, you apply for a new visa. when
the new one is issued, the old one is canceled.
there are certain provinces or cities (or specific schools with enough
pull) where you can apply for a new z-visa while in-country. i wouldn't
plan on it, and would expect to be required to leave the country (HK
counts) to apply for a new z-visa with the paperwork provided by
your new employer. |
