Oman hasn t been in the headlines over here anyways since about 2 weeks. From what I can decipher it seems quite minor compared to other places. Plus I got the impression people still support the Sultan don t they? |

Other that the problems in Sohar, which seem to have settled, most of the students are demonstrating for easier exams, different textbooks, higher allowances, and guaranteed jobs.
In the meantime, the serious complaints seem to be being addressed by the Sultan. We will have to wait and see if they are accepted. My friends there are not packing.

Never say never. I bet the expats in Bahrain are feeling pretty uncertain right now, especially as Iran is weighing in their 500 baiza!! And would the expats in Tripoli have thought they would have to give up their comfortable med lifestyle?!?!
Better to register with your consulate, and prepare for the worst, the kind of attitude you posted is one of complacency and being unprepared for any eventuality...we are not in our home country, this should be remembered, and Oman is not at all far from Bahrain, Saudi or Yemen...
Cheers and beers,

Could you point out anyone who said any such thing?

People in Qatar, Oman, and the UAE are not in Bahrain - or Libya (??). Nor do any of those three countries have any kind of similar situation to Bahrain (or Libya). You are generalizing, and none of them are complacent. Some of them have been in revolutions before.

One should never stereotype just because they share being Arab and Muslim... or geography. One can register with embassies, although if one is American, help can be rare on the ground. They certainly didn't assist any of the teachers that I know who were in Iran in '79. But the Brits helped get them out eventually.
Of course, there are a certain number of uninformed expat teachers, but mature expat professionals know that one is always prepared... anywhere you are in the world.

Easy to type that from your villa in the Emirates or Qatar or whereever you are...in other places in the world they don't have these problems, check what was happening at the Intercon in Muscat, it won't take long before foreigners are on the receiving end of pent up rage.... |

Dear Urbanversion
Out of curiosity, are you even in Oman?

Actually I am surprised at how much of it is getting into the media... both traditional and internet. It seems to be a strange combination of workers joining with strikes for pay and benefits... and unrealistic immature students asking for an education without studying and a job at graduation.
A very different situation than any of the other countries.

It's time they learn to fend for themselves, a nanny state is only good...to a point! |
