Surely not a new topic on these boards, but I find it a bit amusing the students really don't understand what cheating is. I'm not sure if this is widespread throughout Asia but it is sure is common enough in China and Korea at least. I wonder if the thinking goes, 'any way that is easy and achieves good results, is good.' You get the university students who hand in total nonsense using an online translator, or kids who don't see what is wrong about copying directly from notes during a quiz. Yesterday I gave a quiz. They had pretty much all the answers in their notebooks. I had to take away several students' notebooks as were just copying answers that I had given them. They seemed confused why I did this. These kids plan to finish high school in Canada. Another thing they'll do is look up words or expressions in their e-dictionaries and write some fantastic sentences. "The purity of outlandishness is indirectly related to sagacity." Coming from kids who sometimes struggle to answer "When is your birthday?" I find this funny. Not really funny. I know it's really hard for them of course. I try to tell them, 'don't use words you don't know.' Guess I ought to outlaw use of those dictionaries during quizzes too.

They know what cheating is. Their rationale is that "everybody does it."

.
These students are programmed for regurgitating
whatever the teacher says or writes on the board.
It is all about memorizing the model answers.

For your general interest, the 2010 WORLD MEMORY
CHAMPIONSHIP took place in Guangzhou last December,
and will return to China in the first week of October 2011.

Details are easy to find online Arrow

One thing that cracks me up is how BAD some of them are at cheating. They aren't even trying to be sneaky. They will put their arms down then lean their head directly over the paper of the person next to them. Then I will call them for it. Then they will put one hand over their eyes, but whenever they go to look at the other kid's paper, they still lean. At this point I start taking points off their score. After the test I will make fun of them for how bad they are at cheating.

I think cheating has a long history in China. I remember hearing somewhere about the Chinese finding a shirt which was hundreds of years old, and on the inside, in tiny writing, the person had written the answers to the government exams.

Cheating and dishonesty is universal.

Last term, I had a group of freshmen and a group of similarly anxious and mixed abilities. Throughout the term, I stressed their trust in me as a teacher. As we progressed through the term, they were told "This will be on the test."

Among the freshmen, trust was high. Among the third-year students, attendance -- as well as trust-- was low. I had their final tests printed at the school copy center. They were bogus tests. The real tests were printed on my own printer in my apartment.

The third-year students got a copy of the bogus test and spread it around. I know because several were caught with it during the administration of the test. Later, I checked my copy account and found out that students were allowed to copy the test on my account.

The freshmen aced the test. Why? Because they trusted me.

The third-year students failed because they didn't trust me. They trusted the little [bleep] who acquired the test from the copy shop.

Some of the problem lies in teaching method and testing method. Departmental tests and class content don't always match. Class content and teacher-produced tests don't always match; teachers inadvertently test for what the student DOESN'T know because what the test required isn't stressed in class.

This is true not only in China but in my own country. I remember a couple of my BA level classes in which the profs administered tests that weren't derived from lectures which supposedly covered the important points of the text. Instead, their tests were based upon nearly-unrelated personal anecdotes.

Try not to blame the students. Blame the system.

it's one and the same. The future leaders of China are being trained by "the System" that encourages and turns a blind eye on this behavior.

May be correct and I enjoyed what you wrote.

I just find it odd how the kids have no clue about how wrong cheating is here. When they go to Canada or wherever, god help them.

The few times that I have discussed cheating with students, the most common reply was "Everybody does it."

It's sad.
